Sorry to See You Go, Social Security, You Will be Missed

Remember that fun you had taking care of people?

Thank you, Social Security. For more than ninety years you helped tens of millions of retired people survive. Several generations no longer had to live under the same roof, grandparents had a few dollars to slip into their grandchildren’s birthday cards, widows no longer went without or be sent to the Poor House. And way you helped Aunt Betty after Herbert died? That was a relief to her son. Because of you, he was able to marry the woman he loved, buy that little house of their own and start a family. And Uncle Jerry had no children to take him in and could not have survived without your help.

All those great things you did and now that you’re gone.

And Billy? Well, we all knew he had mental health issues but when he retired, you did not hold that against him. You helped him stay in his home, to the relief of his siblings; none of them had a large enough home nor could they afford to take him in but you came through, again.

And aunt Maude, when the company she had worked at for more than forty years was sold to an overseas conglomerate and the new owner closed the business after raiding the pension fund, leaving her with nothing, you came through and provided her enough to enjoy a modest retirement. Another great move on your part, Social Security.

And then there was Cousin Jack. After his illness, he could no longer work but you came through for him. No one in his family could ever have cared for that poor man. And aunt Laurel suffered from Lupus but you, somehow, helped her get through the hard times. And to be fair, she did not have many “good” days but thanks to you she was able to stay active with her church. And when Wilfred had that triple bypass and could not return to work you were there. No one else was, but you could always be depended upon.

And we can’t discount the importance of your younger sister, Medicare. She helped so many sick or injured people of any age get the medical care and medicines needed, all on her own. And she was often the only health insurance retired people could get.

Even your little stepbrother, Medicaid, did his share, helping the poor with healthcare and needed medications.

Social Security, you kept many people from spending their “Golden Years” living on the street and that alone made you a precious friend, a true salvation.

Now, don’t be modest; you helped hundreds of millions of older people and the disabled live on their own, often in their own homes or in retirement communities built for older adults only, many of which provided on-site medical care and physical therapy for those in need of such things.

And now you’re gone

We gave Republicans control and they promptly put you on a five-year Death Sentence. Only Congress could allow you another five years to help but, to no one’s surprise, a single Senator decided to kill you and your little sister, Medicare, and stepbrother Medicaid. You were murdered.

And that’s on us; we could have saved you but were too lazy, too selfish, so we let you go.

Then they slaughtered you, a death by a million cuts, while we stood by and watched.

Only in looking back to when you were in still around, always ready to help those in need, do we realize just what a faithful, reliable friend you were, to all Americans.

And now, we realize our great loss in letting you go.

With great sadness, we mourn your loss; a death that could have been prevented. And if given the chance, you would still be preventing deaths every hour of every day of the year.

It is too late now, has been since the elections of 2022, to thank you, other than posthumously, but we thank you anyway for all the good you did for Americans.

Farewell, Social Security; you will forever be missed, your name heard only in stories told to children of that magical time when we still had you as our friend.

But will those children even believe such a friend to Americans ever existed, or could ever have been real?
