Let me introduce myself to the world. My name is Linda. I’m originally from Cambodia, but I’m currently living in Spain.

This is a wonderful journey for me; there are ups and downs, of course. I’m just a small woman with a big love for adventure and for discovering the beautiful differences between Cambodian and Spanish cultures. I fell in love with a Spanish man who is now my husband. We met in Thailand in 2016, when I was just 23 years old, and who is young, wild, and a little crazy.

I’m not sure where to start, but my journey began when I went to Phuket, Thailand, to find a job and become independent. I’ve always hated it when people tell me how to live my life. I know my parents only wanted the best for me, but somehow their ideas didn’t fit who I am; their world and mine are different. To them, I was their property, expected to follow the rules, obey traditions, and conform to cultural norms.

I started to break those rules and opened up to my mom, helping her understand my desire for independence. I wanted her to trust me and allow me to go to Thailand to discover who I truly am. I showed her my plan and assured her that I had a group of friends who would be there to help me whenever I needed support.

For my journey from Phnom Penh to Phuket, I took three buses, totaling 21 hours. I chose not to fly because I’m trying to save money before I start working there. Previously, I worked for 2 years at both a real estate company and a hotel. It was during that time that I met my now-husband through the Badoo app.

During that time in Phuket, I felt like I was living in a dream. The warm breeze, golden sunsets, and the sound of waves crashing gently on the shore made every moment feel magical. I wandered through vibrant night markets, tasted delicious street food, and met people whose kindness left a lasting impression. Exploring hidden beaches and riding a scooter through lush green hills gave me a sense of freedom I hadn’t felt in years.

And now, 7 years in Spain, I can say that Cambodian and Spanish cultures differ significantly due to their unique histories, religions, and social norms. Communication styles also contrast: Cambodians are generally indirect and polite, avoiding confrontation, while Spaniards are expressive, direct, and passionate in conversation. Time perception reflects this too—both cultures are relaxed about punctuality, but Spain’s social life often extends late into the night.

Festivals highlight cultural vibrancy. Cambodia celebrates the Khmer New Year and Pchum Ben, focusing on spirituality and ancestors. Spain hosts lively events like La Tomatina and Semana Santa, blending religion with festivity.

Food reflects local identity: Cambodian cuisine centers on rice, fish, and tropical flavors, while Spain’s Mediterranean diet features olive oil, seafood, and tapas.

Despite differences, both cultures value family, tradition, and community in distinct yet meaningful ways.

Cambodia and Spain may seem worlds apart, yet both countries hold a special charm that captures the heart. Cambodia, with its ancient temples of Angkor Wat, serene landscapes, and warm hospitality, offers a glimpse into timeless traditions and spiritual depth. Spain, vibrant and passionate, enchants with flamenco rhythms, Mediterranean flavors, and architectural wonders from Gaudí’s creations to Moorish palaces. Each place tells stories through culture, history, and everyday life, inviting exploration and reflection. Traveling between them is like moving through two different worlds, yet both awaken joy and admiration. At the end, I love both Cambodia and Spain.
