frequency of peer bullying

A. Frequency of bullying in real life

B. Cyberbullying frequency

A- Frequency of bullying in real life

There are many people in the world who are exposed to peer bullying and therefore carry the effects of it sometimes for many years and sometimes for the rest of their lives. Bullying is a very important issue and problem. that's why most states have prioritized researching it. As a result, there is a lot of potential loss of talent due to bullying. Too many talented individuals are unable to evaluate their potential and have to lead a relatively unsuccessful life due to the consequences of bullying. for this reason, a lot of research has been conducted, for example. The results of the research that looked at the prevalence of peer bullying showed that students who 1% to 49.5%, the rate of students exposed to bullying is between 5.5% and 56.5%. and the rate of students exposed to bullying varies between 1% and 10.34%. (Baldry 2004, Cerezo and Ato 2005) Although peer bullying is very common in real life, it varies greatly from culture to culture. In another study, Rigby and Slee (1991), in their study with 15152 boys and 10247 girls aged 8-18 in Australia, found that 15.7% of girls and 20.7% of boys were bullied at least once a week. they have determined. After this research, the state started anti-bullying programs to prevent this bullying. After these studies, we can say that every culture has a similar situation regarding bullying and although the rates are not nearly the same, the probability of peer bullying is high in every culture.

B- Cyberbullying frequency

In today's world, thanks to technology, it has become very easy to have video and normal social communication over the internet, and the new generation, born with technology, got used to this convenience and started to benefit from it. (Hinduja ve Patchin, 2009; Palfrey) Although technology can gain many benefits with the intrusion of technology into our lives, it has brought many disadvantages, one of which is cyber bullying. Cyber bullying or virtual bullying is the deliberate and regular sending of messages and pictures aimed at hostility and intimidation by an individual or group to others through information and communication Technologies. (Patchin ve Hinduja, 2006; Ybarra ve Mitchell, 2004 a, 2004 b; Willard, 2005)

With the development of technology, many researchers paying attention to this issue have done research on this subject and have noticed that the frequency of cyberbullying has increased to between 9% and 36%, and sometimes this rate is even higher A lot of research has been done on cyberbullying. for instance ;

Ybarra and Mitchell (2004) 1501 regulars between the ages of 10-17. in the interview they had with the young internet user; 19% of the subjectsthey are involved in bullying on the internet, 4% of them are victims,12% are bullies and 3% are both victims and bullies they found.

In a study conducted by Moessner (2007), 43% of young people between the ages of 13 and 17 stated that they had been bullied in a virtual environment in the previous year. The victims stated that messages or pictures were deliberately sent to them via electronic means such as the Internet and mobile phones in order to hurt or embarrass them.

Based on these researches, the incidence of cyberbullying is so high that we cannot ignore it, since bullying is easy, as is everything on the internet.

Consequences Of Peer Bullying

A- Effects on the victim

B-Effects of bullies

A- Effects on the victim

The consequences of peer bullying are very severe. Children exposed to peer bullying are likely to be affected by the bad experience they have had throughout their lives. these effects can drive them to loneliness, anger, failure, and in the worst case, even suicide. Rigby (2003) classified the negative consequences of peer bullying into four categories.collects. These are low psychological health, low social adjustment, psychological discomfort and physical illness. are symptoms. For low psychological health, we can observe emotions such as sadness, anger. In low social adjustment, it can be observed that the individual's dislike of school and his/her environment and therefore his absenteeism at school increases and becomes withdrawn. The psychological disorder category is more serious than the first two categories, and in this category, the individual may be alone with situations such as anxiety, depression and suicide Psychosomatics in the category of physical illness symptoms are included. The consequences of peer bullying can sometimes be so severe that the person wants to end their life, so precautions should be taken regarding this issue.

B-Effect of the bullies

There are many people in the world who are exposed to bullying and there are people who do this, but why do people choose to bully? In fact, according to studies, it is observed that children who are bullied have serious problems at least as much as children who are bullied. According to research, the biggest reason why children who bully chooses this is because of their families if the family has established a flattened and punishment-based relationship with their children, it is observed that as a result, the child wants to feel more powerful and popular. It has been clearly observed that a large proportion of children who bully experience depression and anxiety. It is observed that bullying children have eating problems, a high probability of substance use, family problems, a bad environment, academic weakness, tendency to fight, and communication problems (Dake, Price ve Telljohann 2003). No one is born a bully, no matter how much bullying is not something to be supported and approved of. In general, bullying is seen due to family problems and parental inadequacies. By considering these results, it can be said that bullying is actually family-based, then are the real bullies families?

Consequences

Peer bullying is too common in all countries to ignore, and research has certainly shown that bullying is very dangerous for bullies and victoms. According to research, people who are bullied can remain under the influence for life after being bullied. These bullied people often suffer from depression, anxiety, fear and hatred of school. If we go further, thoughts such as suicide can be observed in these people, and sometimes it has been observed that they go even further and commit suicide. People who bully suffer just as much as victims who are bullied. According to studies, it is observed that people who bully generally feel the need to prove themselves because of family problems and to overcome these problems. İn general, if the family is in a very repressive and punishment-based relationship with their children, as a result, it is observed that the child continues to be bullied at school if he is able, if he is not physically able, outside of school, that is, through the Internet, which we call cyber bullying. in both cases, in cyberbullying or bullying that happens at school, in two types of bullying, people who do this experience similar symptoms. these are symptoms such as depression, eating disorders, anxiety, lovelessness. the biggest reason for starting this path is the families they grew up with. no one comes into this world as a bully. everyone comes into the world as a normal individual and enters a lifestyle influenced by what they see, and enters this lifestyle unconsciously, without thinking, so it is those who cause it who are more bullies than children who bully.
