Paul Getty's key

Paul Getty's key

By Winfred ParkerPublished 3 years ago 3 min read

Paul Getty, once known as the richest man in the world, is famous for his unique business and management philosophy. Paul once wanted to select one of his middle managers to be his assistant, so he assigned the task to the personnel Department.

After careful planning and screening, the personnel department submitted a list of candidates to Getty. There are three people on the list, all of whom have a lot of experience and can stand on their own two feet, which makes it difficult for Getty to decide. After thinking for a moment, he said, "I'll tell you what. Before the end of the day, we'll call a meeting with all the middle management and have them deliver the inaugural address in public."

The inaugural speeches began, and all three candidates spoke very well, which drew round after round of applause. Sitting in the audience, Mr. Getty listens attentively, nodding his head and playing with a key in his hand, in front of a chic three-color Tang porcelain vase. The vase, bought from China more than a decade ago, is worth enough to one of his subsidiaries.

At the end of his inaugural address, Getty, still undecided, said to the personnel director, "I'll decide on the assistants later. I'm going to a bidding meeting right now. As he spoke, Getty shook the keys in his hand and dropped them into the vase with a clatter. Getty quickly picked up the vase and poured out the key. But it was a strange vase, with a big mouth and a big stomach and a narrow neck. It was easier to get the key in than to get it out. Getty looked at his watch. "Oops, there's no time, this is the only key to my office, I have to go to my office and get the papers!" With an anxious look on his face, Getty suddenly turned to the three candidates. 'You'll have 10 seconds each to get the keys out!'

The three men gathered around the vase. They all knew the value of the vase. They picked it up carefully and tried to pour out the key, but none of them could. Looking at his watch, Getty turned to all the middle managers. "Can one of you help me get the keys out? Five seconds left."

"I'll try it! A man in the corner ran forward, grabbed the vase, banged it down, picked up the keys, and handed them to Getty. The HR director broke out in a cold sweat. The daredevil dropped the vase, a favorite of Getty's and worth a lot of money. Getty would have fired him if he hadn't!

Getty stared at the man for a few seconds and then suddenly asked, "What's your name? What department is it from?" The man said, "My name is Genie. I'm from the projects department." Getty nods. "OK!" "Here is the key to my office. I hope you can be my right-hand man."

Genie was shocked. Everyone was shocked. Getty laughed and said, "A senior executive. Must have good judgment and imaginative vision, between the vase and I'm going to attend the meeting, Jie chose my meeting, decisively break the vase, shows that he has the demand of senior executives, the vase fell can buy again, opportunity lost does not come back, the value of the vase compared with the value of the business opportunities, trivial." Then he waved to Jenny. "Jenny, come with me to that important meeting." Jenny ran out. "I'm going to get the papers." "No, I already have the documents with me," Getty said.

Watching Getty's back as he walked out the door, everyone, including the three candidates, got another taste of Getty's inscrutability.

In our daily life, we all face dilemmas and urgent choices. To make the right decision, we must have good judgment and the courage to make a decisive decision. We must give up the fish and take the bear's paw. If we fail to make a choice on key issues and fail to balance the advantages and disadvantages, we will not be able to accomplish great tasks.
