More Than Teammates

The family that we found in the field

By Shehzad AnjumPublished 5 months ago 4 min read

Before the bat is picked, before the ball is bowled, there is something more powerful that unites us all — a bond that has converted a mundane game of cricket into the source of brotherhood.

What started years ago when a group of buddies tossed a ball off an abandoned field has developed into a tradition that binds us more closely than blood. Week to week, we come together not only to play, but to feel a sense of belonging.

More Than Players

In the field, we are team members, but outside the field, we are brothers. Status doesn’t come into play, nor age — here, everyone is equal. Players who are the youngest play with ones who are in their twenties, and still, no gap is found. Missing a catch is followed by laughter, a well-played shot is followed by celebration, and losing a wicket is followed by a thump on the back to console.

It isn’t about records or scores. It’s about the way we stand shoulder to shoulder, lifting each other when we fall, cheering even the smallest victories. Every ball bowled and every run scored carries with it a sense of shared pride.

Teaching, Learning, Sharing

One of the most wonderful aspects of this tradition is just how much we learn from each other. The bigger ones teach the little ones — not only cricket, but life. A young boy is taught to hold a bat by someone he admires like an older brother. A young person teaches a child who is too impatient to swing around. And occasionally, the tables turn — the little ones teach us of happiness, of exuberance, of playfulness that we forgot.

These experiences extend well beyond cricket. They are a lesson in patience, in kindness, in humility, and in encouraging others. We learn from one another not only to play the game, but to comport ourselves, to treat people, to deal with disappointment, and to rejoice together.

A Brotherhood Forged

What we've constructed is not a cricket team. It's a family. It's a brotherhood of no borders. We are tied together not with blood, but with trust and loyalty.

When one is down, someone else lifts him up. When a guy misses a game, he's missed. When a fella celebrates, the whole bundle comes along. That's why it's a sacred gathering — it's a tie no scoreboard will ever measure.

Cricket is just the language through which we articulate it. Bat and ball are just instruments; the actual game is the one played out by hearts.

Memories That Last

We may forget the details of the matches — who scored what, who bowled best — but what stays with us are the moments. The laughter after a funny misfield. The huddle around a friend who injured his knee. The way we tease each other, argue for a moment, then make peace again as if nothing happened.

These little things, sewn together, become the memories that we take with us long after we are off the field. And it is those memories that bring us back, again and again, each week.

Beyond the Boundary

Even when the game is finished, the rapport lingers. We sit next to each other on the sidelines, share snacks, split chai, and talk of everything and nothing. Problems are addressed here. Advice is provided here. At times, even silence is a kind of companionship.

It doesn’t matter whether life out here is stressful, heavy, or a mess. When we are together, things are lighter. We feel belonging, trust, and the kind of friendship that sticks when life pushes to the extreme.

Why We Keep Coming Back

We do not play to win trophies. We do not play to determine who is first. We play because with this game, we’ve been granted each other.

This tradition has taught us that true wealth is not in victory nor possessions, but in connections. Those of the kind when you feel certain someone has got your back, when you share the freedom of unending laughter, when hardships are not ever met alone.

That is why, no matter how busy life is, no matter what challenges are hurled our way, we return. Because this is more than cricket. This is home.

Final Reflection

Our narrative is basic.

  • A bat.
  • A ball.
  • A field.
  • And hearts that converged.

But out of it has come something exceptional — a brotherhood that transcends borders, transcends generations, transcends even the game. Each time that we come together, we are once again reminded of something true: the greatest thing about cricket is not the runs nor the wickets, but the connections it helps build. Provided that we continue to cling to one another, this tradition will never perish.
