Emotional withdrawal is another danger indicator of emotionally exhausting relationships. You are likely to be numb, withdrawn, or not interested in exchanging ideas and emotions. This withdrawal is usually acquired as a protective mechanism of an ongoing emotional stress. In situations where it is unsafe or futile to express emotions the mind can become shut down to prevent further injury.

Emotional withdrawal is also closely related to loss of joy. Things that were once pleasurable will become boring or tiresome. This affective flattening should not be confused with personal burnout though it can be a reaction to relationship strain. When a relationship regularly undermines the element of emotional vitality, then it is indicative of damage to the mental health which cannot be overlooked.

Experience of Being Trapped, Guilty, or Responsible of Other People.

Draining relationships are usually characterized by too much emotional burden. You can be guilty of focusing on yourself or think that it is your responsibility to take care of the other person. This feeling of obligation may lead to a sense of being trapped, and impossible to leave or define the boundaries. Emotional freedom is substituted with the feeling of guilt, and this elevates the stress within.

This movement has a negative influence on mental health as it suppresses autonomy and emotional independence. When one feels guilty about the happiness of another individual, it results in long term stress and resentment. In the long run, such a trend undermines emotional strength and self-identity.
