Me and that one girl with whom I face lesbian alligations with : lol
When you think of best friends, you might picture late-night chats, inside jokes, and a bond that feels like it could withstand anything. For me and Lily, it’s all that and then some. We’ve been inseparable since middle school, and despite what anyone says, we’re just two girls who have each other’s backs through thick and thin. However, the rumors about us being a couple? They’ve been swirling for as long as we’ve been friends.

It all started in eighth grade, during a class trip to the science museum. Lily and I were, as usual, glued to each other’s sides, giggling and taking selfies in front of every exhibit. It was in the Planetarium, under a canopy of stars, that someone snapped a picture of us leaning in close, pointing at constellations. By the next day, the photo was circulating with the caption, “Are they more than just friends?”
We laughed it off at first, shrugging it off as typical middle school gossip. But the allegations didn’t stop there. High school brought its own set of rumors. Lily and I attended every dance together, not because we were each other’s dates, but because no one else quite understood our bizarre, hilarious dance moves. We shared clothes, had sleepovers almost every weekend, and our families even started referring to us as “the twins.”Our friendship was an endless source of joy.
There was the time we spontaneously dyed our hair bright blue just because we both had a sudden urge to rebel. Or the night we spent watching horror movies and ended up screaming so loudly that Lily’s mom thought we were being attacked. Our adventures were legendary, and so were the whispers.
When we started college, we decided to room together, much to the delight of the rumor mill. Freshman year was a blur of study sessions, late-night pizza runs, and heart-to-hearts about our dreams and fears. Lily was there when I had my first major heartbreak, holding me while I cried and making me laugh with her terrible impersonations of my ex. I was there when she bombed her first big exam, reminding her that grades didn’t define her worth.
Our bond only grew stronger, and so did the assumptions about our relationship. We faced it all with humor and resilience. “Lesbian allegations” became our inside joke. We even created a hashtag, #LesbianAllegations, and used it on social media whenever we posted pictures together, which only fueled the fire but gave us endless amusement.
One night, during our senior year, we sat on the rooftop of our apartment building, sipping hot chocolate and watching the city lights. Lily turned to me, her expression more serious than usual.
“Do you ever think about how much easier it would be if we were actually together?” she asked.
I laughed, but then realized she was serious. “I mean, it would explain a lot,” I replied, nudging her with my elbow.
“But seriously,” she continued, “I think people just can’t comprehend how two people can be so close without it being romantic. It’s like they need to put a label on us.”
I nodded, understanding what she meant. “Maybe it’s because we’re soulmates,” I said, half-joking.
Lily smiled. “Yeah, soulmate doesn’t always mean romantic. You’re my person, you know?”I felt a warmth spread through me. “You’re my person too,” I said, feeling the weight of our friendship in those simple words.
As we navigated post-college life, the rumors became less important. We both started dating other people, and to our surprise, our significant others had to contend with the undeniable fact that Lily and I came as a package deal. There were awkward conversations and jealous moments, but anyone worth our time understood that our friendship was non-negotiable.
One day, Lily met someone special, and I did too. At her wedding, as her maid of honor, I gave a speech about our incredible journey together. I talked about the rumors and how they never defined us. I spoke about the power of friendship, the kind that’s unbreakable and unconditional.
“And to answer the question everyone’s been asking for years,” I said with a grin, “No, we’re not secretly in love with each other. But we do love each other, deeply, in the way that only best friends can.”
Lily laughed, and so did everyone else. In that moment, I realized that no matter where life took us, our bond would remain untouched by rumors or distance. It was a bond forged in laughter, shared secrets, and an unshakeable trust. So, here’s to us, the girls who faced lesbian allegations together.
