Letters to Him
It was a summer night underneath a tall oak tree. The sound of airplanes passing was in the distance as well as fish swimming in the nearby pond. The aroma is earthy and wet from the brief sprinkle of rain. There was a elderly woman with her cane who comes out to this location once a year. Mavis loves to watch the shooting stars that occurred once a year. This year was different and the reason was that her husband Craig wasn't with her.
"Craig I miss you so much." She said. Her heart ached so badly that she feared she might join him rather sooner than later.
She wished she can magically bring him back or she wished he was in a deep sleep. Unfortunately nothing was going to bring him back. That horrific day when his body was discovered was traumatising. Who ever wanted him dead, made complete sure of that.
"I investigated your mysterious death for the last couple months. Nothing can bring you back to me." Mavis said.
She looked at the scene of the summer night. Fireflies were buzzing around. The crickets were singing their nightly song. How can he just pass away like that? There was no explanation besides age, that is what the doctor told her. The change in breeze brings goosebumps, she wraps herself with her jacket tighter.
"I wrote these letters to you. In hopes of possibly coping with grieving. I remain strong. I miss you." She said with tears down her face.
Suddenly she felt a hand on her shoulder. Craig was sitting next to her. She feels her entire body being wrapped as if someone was giving her a hug.
I miss you too, Mavis. I can't wait for the day when we can be together finally. Just be patient my love.
At that moment, she did tense up at first then relaxed because the warmth felt right. He was there, she knew it in her heart. One can't see the dead but it is possible to feel their presence. She smiles cause she knows he is right there with him.
It'll be okay, Mavis. I will wait on the other side for you. I will be the first person to wrap my arms around you.
She stood up and turned around to the little crevice of the tree. With a sigh, she tucked the letters in the tree. She writes one per day that she misses him. Some shorter than others while some are lengthy and wordy. She smiled because she knows that he isn't truly gone. He will forever live on in her heart and memories.
She walks down towards the pond and looks at the two swans. She knows that the heartbreak is tough but she can survive anything that life throws at her. The death of her husband won’t stop her from living, but rather persist in living her life to the fullest.
As she walks home, she sees a lake that is by her lakehouse. She gets a crazy idea and begins to strip off her clothes. Seeing that this was the night and no one would be seeing her, she jumps in.
Under the moonlight she sees Craig swimming up to her. In her imagination, he splashes her and she splashes him back. Laughing and giggling in the lake. Forgetting time, she hears her name being called.
“Mom!”
“Mavis!”
“Grandma Mavie!”
“Where are you?”
She walks to the shore and puts on her clothes. Her daughter, her husband, and their child run up to me.
“Where were you?” My daughter, Lindsey, asked.
“Living my life.” I reply.
