I, a newly hatched beetle, witnessed my older kin disappear effortlessly into the sky while I, brimming with confidence, eagerly flapped my wings to take flight. Alas, a troubling revelation soon emerged—I had no control over my direction! I found myself imitating a headless fly, my blurry eyesight causing disorientation. My mind churned with anxiety, yet I dared not cease my frantic fluttering, knowing well that stopping would seal my untimely demise.

For an unknown span of time, I aimlessly flitted about until I collided with an unseen obstacle. In an instant, icy water enveloped me, its cold embrace swiftly lifting me back to the surface. A glimmer of hope ignited within, believing that salvation had arrived. Little did I know, an even greater calamity awaited.

As the water soaked my wings and body, my delicate wings proved unable to bear the weight, compounded by the impossibility of reaching the water's surface for a second takeoff. With desperate attempts to paddle towards the water's edge and a futile struggle to climb along the container's rim, I found myself hopelessly thwarted by the relentless push of the water. Exhausted and defeated, I resigned myself to lie flat upon the watery surface. Darkness loomed, accompanied by a damp chill. It felt as if I had been cast into a pit of despair, awaiting the inevitable embrace of death. Amidst this desolation, a faint voice echoed in the boundless void before me, "Is this to be my final act? Shall I never gaze upon the fabled 'sunset' my elders spoke of, or feel the caress of a gentle breeze from lofty heights? Throughout my existence, I have beheld naught but flowers and tree roots upon the ground, birds adorned with piercing beaks and talons, towering human feet, and the ubiquitous white walls. Is this the curtain call?"

Suddenly, a tumultuous surge beneath me displaced the water, relocating me to a new vessel. It became evident that humans had entered the scene. In this moment of imminent demise, I, a feeble creature, trembled with trepidation. The humans, in their benevolence, endeavored to rescue me from the watery abyss, reigniting the dwindling flame of hope within my weary heart.

Through their attempts to filter the water and their subsequent decision to pour it onto the ground, I finally found release from the "well of despair." However, a disconcerting realization dawned upon me—I lay upon the ground, exposed and vulnerable! Oh, divine forces, why were our backs designed with such a curved shape? Once again, I found myself dependent on the mercy of humans. Yet, their actions ceased, leaving me stranded in the depths of despair. I strained all six of my legs, desperately attempting to flip my body to one side. Alas, my futile struggle appeared more akin to a whimsical dance—simultaneously comical and agonizing.

Just as my strength waned and the shadows of oblivion encroached, a solitary human figure emerged. As if destiny had intervened, a gentle hand descended, covered in the warmth of tissue paper. Astonishingly, I summoned the last vestiges of my willpower and clung to the edge of the paper, ascending towards newfound salvation!

With each determined movement up the upward-facing side of the paper, I was reborn! Those who came before me often cautioned against the cruelty of humans, and I myself had borne witness to the countless lives of my brethren extinguished beneath their feet. Yet, on this fateful day, a singular human act illuminated the truth—some among their kind possessed a benevolence that extended even to the feeblest creatures. Gratitude swelled within me, a humble beetle, for this extraordinary bond formed with a compassionate human.
