How to Train Your Dragon

Taught Me About Courage, Friendship, and Letting Go

By Syed Umar Published 6 months ago 4 min read
Sometimes the fiercest dragons we face aren't real they're the fears, friendships, and farewells we carry inside us

There are some stories that leave a mark long after the credits roll. How to Train Your Dragon wasn’t just a film I casually watched on a quiet evening it became a mirror to my own life, quietly guiding me through some of its toughest and most beautiful lessons. I didn’t expect an animated movie to hit so deeply, but it did. In fact, it helped me find courage when I was at my weakest, reminded me of the quiet power of friendship, and taught me how to let go with love.

I first watched How to Train Your Dragon during my early twenties an age when the world expects you to have it all figured out, even though you’re secretly scared and searching for identity. I was working a job I didn’t love, in a city that didn’t feel like home, and I often felt like I didn’t quite belong. Then came Hiccup awkward, misunderstood, trying to live up to expectations he never asked for. I saw myself in him immediately.

Facing Fear with Courage

In the Viking world, dragons are enemies. They’re dangerous and destructive. Everyone is taught to fear them. Hiccup, despite being the chief’s son, is small, clumsy, and considered useless when it comes to slaying dragons. But then he does something radical he spares one.

When Hiccup reaches out to Toothless, a Night Fury, instead of killing him, it was one of the most moving moments in the film. That act of kindness of facing what he feared and choosing empathy shifted something inside me.

At the time, I was battling with my own dragons: social anxiety, self-doubt, and an overwhelming fear of failure. I was always playing it safe, avoiding risks, and staying quiet in rooms where I longed to be heard. Watching Hiccup take that chance taught me that courage isn’t about being fearless it’s about doing the right thing even when fear is screaming in your ear.

Slowly, I began taking my own small steps. Speaking in meetings. Saying yes to things that scared me. Starting conversations. And just like Hiccup, I found that the things I feared the most weren’t as terrifying once I faced them with compassion and courage.

The Unspoken Language of Friendship

The friendship between Hiccup and Toothless grows without many words. It’s built on gestures, trust, and shared experiences. Watching that relationship develop reminded me of a friendship I had in high school with a boy named Daniyal. We weren’t the loudest kids in the room. We didn’t text constantly or hang out every day. But we understood each other truly.

When Daniyal moved away, our friendship slowly faded. We didn’t have a falling out we just drifted. For a long time, I wondered if it still counted as a real friendship. But How to Train Your Dragon reminded me that real connection doesn’t always come with noise. Sometimes, it’s the quietest bonds that are the strongest. And even if those friends are no longer beside us, they helped shape who we became.

The Pain and Beauty of Letting Go

One of the most powerful scenes in the entire trilogy is when Hiccup lets Toothless go. It’s a painful goodbye, one that comes not from anger or loss, but from love. Toothless belongs in the Hidden World with his own kind. And Hiccup, now a leader, must let him fly free.

I cried. Hard.

It mirrored something I had gone through not long before saying goodbye to someone I loved deeply. Our paths had diverged, not because we stopped loving each other, but because we were growing in different directions. Letting them go felt like tearing out a part of my soul. But I did it because I knew it was the right thing for both of us.

How to Train Your Dragon showed me that letting go doesn’t mean the end. It means you were brave enough to love, and even braver to release that love when the time comes. That lesson continues to echo in my heart today.

Why This Story Still Matters

The reason why the phrase "how to train your dragon" remains one of the most searched terms online isn’t just because of the film’s popularity. It’s because it speaks to people on a deeply emotional level. Whether it’s through Hiccup’s transformation, his bond with Toothless, or the lessons of love and loss, the story resonates far beyond its fantasy world.

It shows us that we all have dragons some are fears, some are losses, and some are parts of ourselves we don’t yet understand. And just like Hiccup, we have the power to train them—not with swords, but with kindness, patience, and belief in ourselves.
