By Jide OkonjoPublished 3 years ago 3 min read

Nigerian singer Kingsley Chinweike Okonkwo popularly known as Kcee is a musician that has been around for a long time now. Most famous for songs like "Limpopo" and "Pull Over", Kcee has created an audience for himself and still puts out music regularly today that still sells especially in the Eastern parts of the country.

During a new interview with TVC's Wake Up Nigeria, Kcee was asked to give advice to upcoming musicians who are trying to break into the music industry. This spurred Kcee to give out his own unique advice and also open up about how his fake life is what eventually led him to success. Here's what Kcee said.

Kcee on 'Wake Up Nigeria'

During the interview, Kcee was asked "We tend to have a lot of up and coming artistes. How can they create a niche for themselves, because many of them are talented but they seem to be just one of the many fishes in the sea. What can they use to carve a niche for themselves, to set themselves apart from the rest?" He responded:

So that's a lot of job for them to do because if you're going into any industry, any business, even if not music, you need to study it. You need to understand it. You need to create something for yourself. I remember when Don Jazzy came into the industry, came in with his walking stick. D'Banj was coming from London, he came with his mouth organ. Just to create a niche for themselves first, and now they don't have those things anymore. So if you're coming into the industry, look at everybody, and you have to create something for yourself.

"So what did you create yourself?"

Well, growing up I started with showing you so much bling. Showing you that I'm expensive even when I was living in one room. I was showing people that oh I have lifestyle. I would go to somewhere around Surulere, buy those big jackets. Go to Yaba. Try to live luxury life I'm not even [living]. But I was already seeing myself in that picture. And what happened was, people started seeing me in that light. I started writing songs showing that okay, I'm very expensive. I'm rich. And like joke like joke, I started living the life. I started thinking towards that direction. And today, I'm excited that by the grace of God, I'm living real. I used to wear fake [chain] a lot, they used to burn my neck. You will see the iron burning my neck. When sun hit me, it burns my neck. But today, I wear IceBox. So it's a journey you need to build and create. Illusion and God will help you be there. So my advice is create something for yourself.
