Ayra Starr opens up

By Jide OkonjoPublished 3 years ago 3 min read

Nigerian pop superstar Ayra Starr is one of the most exciting and talented young artistes in the Afrobeats scene today. With hit songs like 'Bloody Samaritan', 'Rush', and 'Sability' under her belt, and her no cares given attitude, Ayra Starr has created a lane for herself and is currently enjoying a lot of success in the music industry.

Apart from her music, Ayra Starr is also well known for being very daring in her fashion, often sporting very short skirts, skimpy clothes, and revealing costumes. This is why it is so surprising that during a new interview with Afrobeats Intelligence, Ayra Starr is revealing that she actually went to a Deeper Life school. Here is what Ayra Starr said about attending a Deeper Life school, and how her time in it was.

Ayra Starr during interview

Speaking during the interview about her schooling experience, Ayra Starr said:

AYRA STARR: I went to a very religious school even though I was not from a religious family. I went to a Deeper Life school. It was a shock but I learnt how to live with it. They used to beat me!

"Did you stand out so much?"

AYRA STARR: Too much! I stood out too much. I grew up in a household where we were allowed to speak our truth and just like ask questions. I can remember they would tell me like 'women re not allowed to wear trousers', and I'll be like 'that's not true. God did not say that'. And they would be like 'What do you know you this small girl?'. I would be like 'Show us if if God said it' [laughs]. One time I painted my nail pink, just one nail pink. And one teacher saw it and I remember they like knelt me down and it was all these teachers and they were just like 'you can never be anything if you continue like this'. I was literally like 13/14, and we had like these female teachers around me saying that 'you're painting your nails pink?'.

"Have you been in communication with any of those people from school? Your teachers from back then?"

AYRA STARR: Uhmmm, I have a teacher that literally like inspired me. He literally said I was going to be signed to MAVIN, it's crazy. I was like 14 then and he was like 'you're going to be signed to Mavin. Mavin is going to sign you, start making videos', and he would just inspire me. When I'm singing, he would be like oh sing in the choir. And he was even muslim, but he would tell me 'go to church and join the choir'. He was my maths teacher and he just inspired me. Also, my civic teacher. So Mr. Saheed, Mr. Yinka, God bless you guys!

Wow! This is why good teachers are so important. Shoutout to all the teachers actually encouraging and uplifting the young children under their care everywhere around the world.
