How I Feel About Wizkid Insulting Rappers - Pheelz

Pheelz talks Wizkid diss

By Jide OkonjoPublished 3 years ago 3 min read

Top Nigerian musician Wizkid caused quite a shock wave around the music scene when he made a declaration that rap music was "dead". In his exact words, Wizkid said during an interview with 10 Magazine:

If I’m being honest, I don’t listen to any other genre of music anymore. I don’t listen to rap – that shit is boring to me. It’s dead now, it’s tired. These guys do the same shit, rap on the same beats and the same flows.

Since saying that a number of rappers have come out to slam his remarks. Everybody from MI Abaga to Blaqbonez has expressed their feelings on the matter. Now, Nigerian producer and singer Pheelz is also giving his own two cents on the whole saga. During a new interview with Cool FM, Pheelz was asked about his thoughts on what Wizkid said along with other things. Here's what Pheelz said.

During his interview, Pheelz was first asked "Afrobeats is absolutely dominating. One point in time you tweeted that you love the growth of Afrobeats. Was that ever in doubt for you? Was there ever a time you said I'm not quite sure it's going to go so far? Or you always knew Afrobeats was going to take it to the next level?" He responded:

I always knew that what we needed in this space was just platform. You know me, I've seen Afrobeats rise. I'm coming from the Alaba marketer days where you'll sit down with Uba Pacific and discuss about the Olamide album. That's where I'm coming from. That's a different kind of space. So I always knew from that time that all we needed was a higher platform to showcase ourselves and we will rule the world. Now that that has come, I'm just more happy that I am part of the growth and the movement and also an artiste as well. So you know, it's double blessing for me.

"Big Wiz has said that the rap genre is dead in Nigeria. Do you share the same sentiments?"

Firstly I feel that's his opinion and I think we need to see it as that. Secondly, I don't think anything can be dead just cuz someone says it is. Shoutout to Wiz, I love Wiz but I don't think anything is dead. Yes the attention it got might not be the same as what it is getting, but it can be better. Like we can always work on it. There are amazing hip hop artistes in Nigeria, in Africa. There are amazing rap artistes out there in the world. I still think rap music is really alive. I think it would just morph into something.
