Hitting Rock Bottom to Rise

What Happens When You Forget Yourself

Hitting Rock Bottom to Rise

Sara had left the office just ten minutes earlier when her boss called with a last-minute request. She had to pick up some advertising material from the print shop—just a quick detour before heading home.

She sighed quietly, the phone still warm in her hand. Her usual road was closed due to an accident. Another sigh.

What to cook for dinner? She needed to buy bread, pick up shirts from the laundry, get the kids from school. Oh—there was soccer practice today, too. She’d almost forgotten. She didn’t have time to sit in traffic.

So she took a narrow side street she barely knew. No time to waste.

The late afternoon sun cast a golden light over everything, making even the dust seem magical. Then it happened. Just a moment.

A glint of glass caught the sunlight, blinding her briefly. She was about to pass it by when she saw him.

Sitting at a corner table, relaxed, casual. Him. Her husband. He wasn’t alone. Across from him, a young woman. Fresh. Light. A soft summer dress revealing skin kissed by the sun, her hair cascading over her shoulders, an open, effortless smile.

She was laughing. He was laughing too. That deep, real kind of laugh Sara hadn’t heard in years. He was laughing with his eyes. And those eyes—those eyes were locked on the girl in front of him, as if the rest of the world had vanished.

It was the look of a man in love.

Sara felt pain explode in her chest. Not physical—but sharp, real, breath-stealing. She kept walking like in a dream. Numb. Something inside her cracked, permanently.

She reached the print shop, picked up the box, and walked back to the car, her thoughts spinning in a fog of disbelief.

Why? Since when? Did he love her? Of course he did. Sara had seen that look before—years ago, when he looked at her the same way.

Now it was for someone else.

She couldn’t breathe. She couldn’t think. She drove home like a ghost, questions falling silent into the dark pit forming inside her. Her heart beat like a hammer. Her mind pricked with pain.

When she walked through the door, she didn’t turn on the light. She dropped her shoes, let her bag fall on the couch, and the tears came. Hot. Silent. Endless. She didn’t even try to stop them.

Then she looked up. There was a mirror in the entrance. And in that mirror stood a woman she barely recognized.

Tired. Dull. Disappointed.

Efficient. Present. But not alive.

Smart. Kind. But not happy.

When had it happened, this transformation? When had she become a faded version of herself?

--------------------------------------------------------------

Sara was one of many. Women who give, and give, and give—until there’s nothing left of who they once were. They say “not now” one too many times. They say “after the kids” until the kids no longer need them. They say “it’s just a phase”, until years have gone by and the mirror shows a stranger.

Because when you forget yourself, it doesn’t happen all at once.

It’s a slow erosion.

And one day, you wake up and wonder: Where did I go?

You’ve stopped laughing.

You’ve stopped dreaming.

You’ve stopped shining.

And when you stop shining, the light around you dims too.

It’s not about age or wrinkles.nIt’s the spark in your eyes, the warmth in your voice, the quiet confidence that draws people close.

Men, children, friends, the world—they're drawn to energy. To life.

And life can’t thrive where you’ve vanished.

Sara hit rock bottom. But from there, she can only rise. And maybe you, reading this, feel a flicker of recognition. Maybe you’ve also slipped away from yourself without even noticing.

This is your turning point.

Not to punish.

Not to chase anyone.

But to reclaim you.

I wrote a full article about this moment—the moment a woman decides to stop fading and start living again. It’s a story you might have waited years to hear.
