According to the American Psychological Association, people with anxiety often experience a future-oriented fear that leads them to avoid anything that could potentially trigger a stress response. In 2017, the National Institute of Mental Health reported that approximately 40 million people worldwide suffer from anxiety. Despite being highly treatable, only 36.9% of those affected seek treatment. This reluctance might stem from the fear of being judged or the stigma associated with mental illness, which can negatively impact their lives.

Does any of this sound familiar? Do you worry that you might be suffering from anxiety without even realizing it? Here are 10 tell-tale signs of hidden anxiety to look out for:

1. Avoiding Face-to-Face Conversations: You might be great at keeping conversations going through text or online, but when it comes to talking to someone in person, it’s a different story. Even with people you know well, you feel tense and nervous, struggle to make eye contact, and often find yourself wanting to end the conversation as quickly as possible.

2. Being Excessively Self-Conscious: Do you feel like everyone is watching, listening to, and judging you the moment you walk into a room? Perhaps you’re overly aware of how you walk, eat, sit, or even how your voice sounds. This heightened self-awareness could be a sign of hidden anxiety.

3. Being Easily Upset or Irritated: Have people told you that you’re too sensitive? Do your feelings get hurt easily? Anxiety can make you emotionally volatile, leading to frequent mood swings, temper tantrums, and irritability, especially when you’re overwhelmed.

4. Panicking Over Small Surprises: Anxiety can make you feel the need to be in control at all times. An unexpected phone call, a knock at the door, or even a minor, easily fixable mistake can send you into a panic. You might find it hard to relax when things don’t go exactly as planned.

5. Struggling with Indecisiveness: Do you have trouble making even the simplest decisions? Are you afraid of making a mistake and therefore overthink your choices? Anxiety often manifests as perfectionism or a fear of failure, making it difficult to trust your own judgment.

6. Overanalyzing Past Conversations: Do you replay past conversations in your head, analyzing every word, gesture, and tone? You might obsess over what you should have said or done differently, which can keep you on edge long after the conversation is over.

7. Keeping Yourself Constantly Busy: To avoid feeling restless or anxious, you might fill your day with tasks, even if they’re simple or unnecessary. Staying busy can be a way to distract yourself from anxious thoughts.

8. Engaging in Negative Self-Talk: Anxiety can make it hard to feel good about yourself. You might constantly talk yourself down, believing you don’t deserve happiness or success. This can trap you in a cycle of negative thinking and self-criticism.

9. Being Overwhelmed by Negative Thoughts: Are you quick to focus on the downsides in any situation? Do minor inconveniences feel like major setbacks? This pattern of catastrophic thinking is common in people with anxiety, leading to a constant battle with negative thoughts.

10. Experiencing Physical Symptoms: Sometimes, anxiety manifests physically before your mind even recognizes it. Symptoms like a racing heart, chest palpitations, muscle tension, a clenched jaw, shaky hands, or excessive sweating can all be signs of anxiety. Your body might be trying to alert you to underlying anxiety before it gets worse.

Do any of these signs resonate with you? Are you doing your best to seem okay, even if you’re struggling with hidden anxiety? Remember, you’re not alone, and there’s no shame in having mental health challenges. What will you do next? Let us know in the comments below
