He had the green light senor

How a drunk driver nearly killed Christmas

By Lawrence Edward HincheePublished 5 years ago 4 min read

I was approaching the intersection and the light turned green for me. I proceeded through the light at the posted speed limit of thirty miles per hour. An hour later all I remember is being pulled from my vehicle and placed in the back of an ambulance. I had no clue where I was located nor what had happened. All I knew is I hurt like hell. Somewhere between being pulled out of my vehicle and being placed into the ambulance, I became combative with the paramedics. I looked across the street and there was another green light. I knew this was the Sunday before Christmas and green would be dominant but where was this coming from? The paramedics asked me if I remembered my car accident and I said no. I do know the street lights had Christmas decorations on them some with green lights.

I was transported to the hospital and wheeled out of the ambulance and onto a table. They did a brain scan and many other tests. When my wife arrived they told her the tests they had performed and when they mentioned the brain scan my twelve year old son being a smart ass asked if they found a brain. My head hurt like hell so did my neck, back and legs. I had to work the next day delivering pizzas and totally avoided the area of my accident for months. I had a severe concussion and severe whiplash and three herniated disc in my back.

Since my wife was a nurse, they sent me home. It was the worse case of sleep depravation ever. My parents came out from VA and my stepmother was also a nurse and she asked me what all hurt and I told her, she took me to the doctor to get everything documented. We had a lot going on with Christmas, and visitors plus dinner.

When I saw my truck, it had been moved off it's frame and six inches to the right. It had cracked my windshield in four different places, dislodged the console inside the truck. My truck was totaled and I was none to happy about it. I called my bank and told them what had happened, the explained they would do a substitution of collateral for me. In other words go to the dealer and tell them you have this much and make a deal from there. I went to the dealership and looked, but found nothing. Went to another dealership and found what I was wanting but not really.

It was a newer version of my truck, green in color, very low miles, six cylinder, five speed, four wheel drive, Had it not had that package on there, I wouldn't have bought it because red is my favorite color. That was a great package to have especially living in Colorado. My physical therapy was not very successful, so I had to retain a lawyer. I had to have back surgery which caused significant pain. Then a year later, I was given a significant green settlement of $50,000.

The driver of the other vehicle took off on foot, he had no green card either, was drunk, no proof of insurance and reported his car stolen two hours after the accident. How convenient is that? When the officer told the person who hit hit me was an illegal immigrant, I responded well that narrows it down to one in about 150,000 in the city. The officer stated he wouldn't dignify it with a response, laughed and walked out of my room.

A week after the accident I went to the police department and paid cash to get a copy of the accident report. In the report it shows the vehicle that hit me was heading east, I was heading north. When I came to rest, I was in the south turn lane facing west. I had crossed a median and don't know how I maintained control of my vehicle through all of that. I do remember talking to my dead uncle, who had died in May of that year.

As I had surgery on my back and I came home from the hospital, my neighbor was Mr. Grumpass that day because my cat shit in his wife's flower bed. He came over to my door about fifteen minutes after I arrived home telling me to fight him like a man. I turn and walk away. I walk into my house with my back now hurting fears that I have been ripped open, and our friend arrives at the house and asks what's going on. They tell him, he goes out and tells my neighbor you want to fight someone, you fight me, My friend just had back surgery last night and we are checking to make sure you didn't rip open any sutures.

My neighbor came in and apologized and said he was just upset and didn't realize I had just had back surgery. He told me take the next two weeks off and my son will mow the grass and take care of the chores.
