Generation Genesis

My thoughts of the name of the current generation

By Michael NoonPublished 4 years ago 3 min read

As you may know, generations typically span across 20-25 years. The current generation, Gen Z, is nearing its end. We are in the midst of entering the timeframe of a new generation. Names of past generations have varied and changed slightly where some have stayed the same throughout their usage. With the new generation coming up, there has been term that has been ‘coined’ as Generation Alpha. I hereby propose an alternative.

I’d like to submit for your consideration, MY term for the upcoming generation: Generation Genesis. The reason for my conclusion does not come from biblical connections. It merely comes down to what is happening, what will be happening in the near future, and what has happened in the past. We are on the brink of some amazing events happening.

Genesis means the beginning or origin of something new. Our upcoming generation is going to have huge opportunities to create some grand innovations. Just like Gen X being born around the time of the Moon landing, Genesis will be around when we land on Mars. Some may be young when we do but plenty will be old enough to remember and be inspired. Aside from the inspiration, the technologies that will be unlocked will take us beyond our wildest dreams. Many concepts and theories will be able to be materialized and Genesis will take us down that path. Genesis could generation the next Elon Musk or Steve Jobs.

Even though Millennials and Gen Z are currently being mocked, some of them are changing the world for the betterment of mankind. Naming the next generation Genesis can instill a sense of grandeur and importance. This could lead to a boost of self-esteem and confidence to be and do something marvelous for the world.

Using the term Alpha has more of a connotation of domination and supremacy. It is true that there is a reference as a beginning such as letters or time. Alpha could lead to the next 23 generations as the Greek alphabet and be made to feel inferior. That would only take us down a possible dark and deep path that we can’t afford to head down. I feel the name Genesis would provide a better reference to a beginning. It simply has a better possibility of greatness.

Currently, many people are using the term Generation Alpha. ultimately, the generations are not definitely named until the actual generation becomes older. Even Generation Y is called the Millennials and the Silent Generation are called Traditionalists. Many of the generations go through a naming phase until society starts using one more over the other. My opinion of the matter feels more logical and the people I have discussed it with agree with me.

I may not be on the forefront of any naming committee but if enough people use a term to name a group of people, it'll stick for a lifetime to come. As we move forward with how we can save the future of the world, only giving them an optimistic outlook will benefit. Telling someone they are the beginning rather than they are better than someone is how peace is more assured to become reality.

If you feel like this is a sound proposal, I’m requesting that you share, discuss, and use the term Generation Genesis. Using this name more often, and as much as possible, will alter the choice of what everyone else will call our next group of young people. They have the power to become one of our greatest generations. Our future is in their hands and giving them the inspiration to be the best they can be is part of our job.
