Fear of Judgment and an Unhealed Ego

By Julie O'Hara - Author, Poet and Spiritual WarriorPublished 3 months ago 3 min read

This is a topic that might trigger some. Being “blessed” with an unexpected spiritual awakening can be very frightening. And it is often a person’s first inclination to hide what they are going through out of fear of being seen as crazy. But hiding your awakening from others is one of the worst things you can do. Fear of what others think is an ego issue. If someone has issues with your spiritual awakening that is on them, and you need to release the fear of what they think. Do not let their human intolerance control you!

Fear of judgment and an unhealed ego

Understanding the Spiritual Journey

Every individual's spiritual journey is unique, often characterized by personal growth, exploration, and transformation. This journey can include practices like meditation, yoga, studying spiritual texts, and connecting with a community or nature. However, many people feel compelled to hide this aspect of their lives due to fear of judgment from others.

The Role of the Ego

The ego, in psychological and spiritual contexts, is often described as the part of the self that identifies with thoughts, beliefs, and social roles. An unhealed ego is primarily focused on self-preservation, validation, and defense. When this part of oneself is dominant, individuals may fear judgment, leading them to conceal their true beliefs or experiences.

Fear of Judgment

1. Social Norms and Expectations: Society often has rigid norms about what is acceptable or "normal." People may fear being judged as "weird" or "different" when they share their spiritual beliefs or practices. This fear can stem from the ego's desire for acceptance and belonging.

2. Comparison and Competition: The unhealed ego fosters a sense of competition with others. The fear of being judged can arise from comparing one's spiritual journey with that of others. This comparison can reinforce feelings of inadequacy.

3. Vulnerability: Sharing one's spiritual beliefs is a vulnerable act. The ego often resists vulnerability, fearing that sharing can lead to rejection or ridicule.

Hiding the Journey: A Sign of an Unhealed Ego

1. Self-Protection: When individuals hide their spiritual journeys, they may think they are self-protecting. However, this is often a manifestation of an unhealed ego that fears rejection or not being understood.

2. False Identity: An unhealed ego can lead to adopting a false identity that aligns with societal expectations. Hiding spiritual beliefs can be a way of maintaining this façade, preventing genuine connections with others.

3. Stunted Growth: Concealing your journey can hinder personal growth. The ego often prevents people from openly exploring and discussing their spirituality, which is essential for healing and evolution.

Healing the Ego

1. Embrace Vulnerability: Acknowledging and embracing vulnerability is crucial. Sharing your spiritual journey can attract like-minded individuals and foster deeper connections.

2. Practice Self-Acceptance: Accepting oneself, including one's spiritual beliefs and practices, helps heal the ego. When you are comfortable in your own skin, fear of judgment diminishes.

3. Shift Perspective: Focus on spiritual growth rather than validation from others. Remind yourself that your journey is for you, not for others’ approval.

4. Seek Community: Connecting with supportive communities can provide a safe space for sharing experiences without fear of judgment. This can help reinforce self-worth and promote open dialogue about spirituality.

Conclusion

Hiding your spiritual journey out of fear of judgment often signifies an unhealed ego. By understanding this dynamic, you can begin to embrace your authentic self. Remember, your spiritual path is unique and valid. Allowing yourself to share your journey can be liberating and promote growth, both for yourself and those around you.
