Cuban Doctors Attend to the Health Deficit in Mexico.

Cuban doctors work in Mexico.

Over the years, the Cuban regime, once led by Fidel and Raúl Castro and now headed by Miguel Díaz Canel, continues to promote their doctor missions in Latin American countries. These campaigns aim to provide assistance to countries with weaker healthcare systems. Recently, Mexico has joined this trend, welcoming 700 Cuban doctors to various parts of the country. President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has expressed gratitude for their support in addressing the lack of specialists. However, there are underlying motives behind Cuba's efforts.

Cuba's strategy involves offering their professionals to countries in need, presenting themselves as humanitarian while also seeking to finance their regime. These doctors often work in conditions that resemble servitude, with limited pay and control over their earnings. The Cuban government manipulates its doctors' work for political purposes, leveraging their presence to influence the politics of host countries.

One doctor, Miguel Guerrero Fernández, shares his experience as a Cuban doctor on a mission. He explains that the Cuban government indoctrinates doctors with an ideological agenda from the beginning of their training. Doctors are trained to participate in political events and influence elections in host countries, deviating from their original purpose of providing medical assistance.

Miguel reveals the controlled environment within the missions, where the Cuban government exercises significant control over the doctors and clinics. He mentions the presence of Cuban state security agents within the healthcare personnel, infiltrating the missions and monitoring the doctors. Any attempt to leave the mission is considered desertion and can lead to detention, loss of earnings, and expulsion back to Cuba.

Miguel made the difficult decision to leave the mission in Venezuela in 2016. He took advantage of a visit to his family in Cuba and secretly left for Colombia with the help of a patient. He then applied for refugee status in the United States, leaving his family behind in Cuba. The Cuban government retaliated by intimidating and pressuring his family, considering him a deserter who had betrayed the ideals of communism.

Miguel's story sheds light on the exploitative nature of Cuba's doctor missions and the far-reaching consequences faced by those who choose to leave. The Cuban regime uses these missions as a mechanism for propaganda and political influence while disregarding the well-being and rights of their doctors.

He didn't even hesitate to support me. They understood the oppressive nature of the Cuban regime and the sacrifices I had to make for my own freedom.

Now, living in the United States, I've been able to practice medicine in a free and democratic society. It's a stark contrast to the conditions I experienced during the mission in Venezuela. Here, I have the opportunity to provide healthcare without being forced to serve a political agenda or compromise my professional ethics.

Reflecting on my journey, I can't help but feel a sense of frustration and anger towards the Cuban government. Their exploitation of healthcare professionals under the guise of humanitarian missions is nothing short of deceitful. They manipulate the international community's perception of their healthcare system while disregarding the rights and well-being of their own doctors.

I hope that by sharing my story, more people will become aware of the true nature of these Cuban medical missions. It's important to see beyond the propaganda and recognize the human rights abuses and coercion that underlie these programs. Only through awareness and solidarity can we work towards a world where doctors are valued for their expertise and dedication, rather than being treated as pawns in political games.

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to share my experiences. It's crucial that we shed light on these issues and advocate for the rights and freedom of healthcare professionals everywhere.
