Coincidences Brew Love

A short story on romance

By Winifred SaliuPublished 2 years ago 3 min read

Rain pelted the window panes of the cozy café, casting a soothing spell on Sarah. Her eyes darted between the cup of coffee in front of her and the inscrutable textbook that lay on the table. A quick sip of caffeine and back to the drudgery of studying. As she reached for her phone, a flash of movement caught her eye.

The movement belonged to the barista, Jake. He was preparing a cup of coffee for an elderly man. From where she was seated, Sarah could see Jake’s hands flying over the coffee machine, frothing milk and creating latte art. It was like watching a maestro at work.

Mesmerized by his expertise, she didn't realize that he was looking at her, smiling. Their eyes locked for a moment, and Sarah's heart skipped a beat. She looked away, embarrassed, and buried herself in her books again.

Days passed by, and on Sarah's next visit to the café, she found that they had something new on the menu - a poignant painting on the wall. Lost in thought, she admired the painting.

"Interesting, isn't it?" A voice near her said, jolting her back to reality. "I painted that," said Jake. A flicker of surprise crossed Sarah's face. "Really?" she said.

And thus began their conversations over coffee, sometimes grammar books, and sometimes paintings. Jake was an artist, revealed Sarah. And he painted beautiful scenic landscapes on canvas.

"You know, I used to paint too," said Sarah wistfully, sipping her coffee. "What do you like to paint?" asked Jake. "I used to paint portraits of people I met,” Sarah admitted. “They were like stories on a canvas."

Jake’s eyebrows rose, impressed, and he grinned. "A storyteller and a painter. That's unique. I'd love to expose your work someday."

And so it continued. Every evening, they would see each other at the café, and their conversations deepened. They talked about everything - from books and art to relationships and life.

But fate had other plans. The café announced a farewell party for Jake, who was moving to the big city to continue his art career. Sarah was disappointed, but she had already promised herself that she would support Jake in his endeavors.

On the day of his farewell party, Sarah walked up to Jake, standing awkwardly away from the crowd. "I'm going to miss you," she said. "I'll miss you too," Jake replied. For a moment, they both looked into each other's eyes, wanting to express more than words. But before they could, Jake's coworker called him, and he turned away to join the party.

As Sarah drove back home that night, she thought about Jake and admitted that she had already fallen for him. Maybe it was the coffee or the paintings or Jake's captivating smile, but she knew that she had been drawn inexplicably to him. Could it have been love?

Days went by, and Sarah focused on her studies to get over Jake. But the memories they had shared during those months lingered in her mind. They visited her even while she was at home, cooking, painting, and doing the things she loved.

Months turned into a year, and Sarah decided to visit the art gallery. She loved looking at art - it was a way of escaping her busy life - and painting on her own. As she walked around the gallery, her gaze fell on a painting - a painting she recognized.

It was Jake's painting.

Sarah couldn't believe her eyes. It was a beautiful depiction of their little café. Jake's expertise with brush strokes was visible, and his ability to capture reality was unparalleled. Sarah stood rooted to the spot. It was as if Jake had left a piece of his soul in that painting. Or was it a message he was trying to convey to her?

As she turned around, Sarah saw Jake standing behind her. He had a pensive look on his face. Knowing that some questions don't have easy answers, Sarah stepped up to him, her hand on his shoulder. It was then that Jake turned around, taking Sarah into his arms. It was as if a piece of their heart fitted together as they held onto each other.

They knew that time had little control over magic and destiny. That day forward, they left the gallery, their hands entwined, and their love deepened with every step they took.
