Choices

Life is about choices. We wake up each day and make a choice, stay in bed or get up. That is the first choice that begins a daily journey. Some choices are easier than others. Some are a little tougher. We make our days easy or difficult because of those choices.

Some people seem to breeze through life. It all seems so easy for them, but even they have made several choices in the course of their day, whether they realize it or not. You may not think about it but every day is not the same. Just one single different choice can change an entire day.

Why do we choose what we choose? I believe priorities have a lot to do with it. What is important to you and what can wait. What you should do vs what you want to do. I may want to hang out on the beach all day but I know I have housework that needs to be done. What I choose will make the difference in my day. But…can the housework wait? Maybe but then there will be more the next day. What to do? I will have to make a choice. I will have to choose one over the other if I can’t do both. Maybe I could do both but that means another choice has been placed in front of me.

Imagine a day where you knew exactly what you were and were not going to do. Sounds great right? You get out of bed and you knew what you were having for breakfast, and everything goes as planned. You go about your day in a pre planned way. Perfect so far? Sure why not, we’re just imagining. In your mind it is the perfect day. Lunch time is that soup and sandwich you already planned to have. WOW this is great! No surprises, nothing different. You breeze through the day exactly as you wanted. No choices to make so far, you had it all planned out. So you thought. Then the phone rings and your friend reminds you of the appointment you forgot about. Well that’s something you forgot to plan on. What now? OH NO… you have to make a choice.

My point to all that is that choice is a conscious decision, always! Options are set before us and we must choose. Do we always make the right choice? No, but at that moment, what we decide has an immediate impact on our lives. Some choices leave you carrying that decision for life. Others last for a moment.

My life has been a series of unfortunate events but those choices led me to where I am today. I made some pretty bad decisions but I made some pretty good ones too. Sometimes we make decisions listening to our heart…others with our head, and some we make spur of the moment. Only you know if it’s a right or wrong one. Sometimes we really get frustrated and cannot make a choice on our own. We may ask for help, but still the final decision is ours and ours alone. Others can certainly influence our choices. Only you know what needs to be done.

Having to make choices seems like it should be easy, it’s not. Every choice we make can have a consequence or impact. Either for bad or good. Sometimes we are not the only ones to feel the impact. If I choose to spend the day in bed when my granddaughter wants my time, that choice affects her. If I choose solitude instead of time with my guy, that affects us both. Others choices impact us as well. When someone decides to act like an idiot in front of others, everyone feels it. When someone treats you like an option and not a priority, although their choice, it can be painful.

In closing I just want to say… think before you decide. Don’t make a decision hastily or because others want you to. We have choices for a reason. We get to decide. Don’t let anyone make them for you. Life is your decision, you have to live with those decisions. So make them good ones. Life is too short to be anything but happy.
