Billy saves the world?
Billy finds something she never thought possible
The day started as any other, monotonous and routine, wake up, breakfast, brush teeth, dressed for school, leave before 7.30. Every day since kinder Billy had trudged through the bland morning routine of any student in modern first world society, a little more boring than some, a little more exciting than others. She was thankful, others couldn't attend school, but was also so bored.
She thought that starting college would make things less monotonous, inject a little spice into entirely too many years of institutionalized learning, but it hadn't, and it was already halfway through her second year.
Her parents had left for work as always by 7.15, also stuck in a routine that Billy wasn't too keen on following.
7.24 and she was leaving for school, it was a ten minute drive to her college campus, or a twenty minute walk, and this particular day Billy decided to walk.
Step by step she drew nearer her school, the heavy feeling in her gut grew, taking on a mind of its' own as it writhed in her stomach.
Today was a normal day, just like every other day, but today she felt different. The toe of her shoe kicked something obscured in brush overhanging her path, a book.
She stood frozen, staring at the little black book still partially obscured still by the brush she had kicked it from. The cover was dirty, but the quality of the moleskin was evident, with a quick glance around she bent down and picked it up.
The book felt warm and weighty in her hand, and as she brushed the dirt from its' cover she noted the intricate sewed designs, like vines adorning the outside.
"Neat," she muttered, tossing it into her bag and heading towards school, making a mental note to find the owner when she had a chance.
----
That evening Billy arrived home and tossed her bag on her desk, exhausted and cranky from a long day. The book forgotten.
It wasn't until she was tucked up in bed some time later she even remembered the thing. With the jerky movements of an overtired teen she slid to the floor and grab her bag, rummaging in it until she found the book. It took a little more fumbling in the dark to turn on her lamp, and there she sat, book and girl, beside her desk on the floor.
The book still felt warm as she opened the cover to the first page:
You have found me.
I am here to serve. Write your intention and the universe will answer. Hear me, see me, I am your guide.
Billy stared at the writing, confused and a little weirded out. "What?"
She read and reread the text, before taking a pen and writing, what are you?
Write your intention. I am here to serve.
At this point Billy was uncomfortable, the book had written back to her? Maybe a monotonous life wasn't so bad if insanity was the alternative?
Money? Lots of money? she wrote, feeling more than a little moronic.
The book seemed to vibrate and she let out a yelp as hundred dollar bills fell from the pages onto her legs and carpet. It didn't stop and Billy grew more panicked as the pile grew, standing up and hauling a suitcase from her wardrobe to frantically stuff cash into.
Minutes passed and the suitcase grew full too quickly, Billy began filling drawers in her desk, empty bags, anything that would hold any of this mysterious moleskin cash.
stop! she wrote, finally too panicked to continue, with a final huff, a handful of bills puffed from the pages and settled on the floor, much to her relief.
Billy took the day off school the following day, which while unusual was not unheard of, and began to count her money which both to her delight and dismay had not disappeared overnight.
Neat stacks soon lined her walls, $10,000 in each until she had 100 stacks, a million dollars...
"This is insane," she whispered, looking from the neat piles to the bulging bags and drawers still filled with cash. She grabbed the book, flipping through the pages, trying to discover anything that even hinted at what had happened last night. The only page with anything written on it was the page she had written on last night.
She hadn't done anything for this money, so guilt crept into her mind, had she taken this from someone? Where had this money come from?
Her phone notification beeped from her dresser, when she unlocked the screen she saw several million had been transferred into her bank account. The phone beeped again and again, more and more money appeared in her bank, a feeling of dread crept into her throat, this wasn't good.
Make this look normal she wrote, hoping that the book could explain away to the FBI why an eighteen year old had suddenly come into so much money.
Hey honey, your great Aunt Marianne died and has left us some money, we sorted it out with the lawyers already, should be clearing your account today! Love Mom
Billy didn't have a great aunt Marianne but wasn't about to argue with the welcome explanation to her sudden multi-millionaire status.
Billy opened her laptop and logged into her college online portal, paying her course completely, and marveling at the only miniscule dent in her bank account. This is how the 1% feels right? Money means nothing?
She grabbed the little black book and smiled, with this she could change the world, make things that should matter actually matter, give the world universal healthcare, fix climate change, end poverty, hunger, cancer, fix the entire world, the possibilities were endless!
With a wicked grin she sat down, laptop and book before her, ready to remedy things all over the world from the comfort of her little bedroom, a nameless Batman...
