Being Sober at a Drunk Party
It was fun but a weird kind of fun
It was a first for me. It was a once-in-a-lifetime kind of experience. It happened a while ago, but I think it will be fun to share it now to showcase that being sober at a party where everyone else is drunk allows you to see things from a weird but fun perspective.
I hadn't been feeling well for the past week or so. Hence, I decided not to drink during this particular party. It was a gathering of close friends making everyone comfortable from the get-go. There were more than ten people; I don't remember the exact count as it happened some time ago.
We had whiskey, tequila, wine, and juice (for me). People were drinking whatever they could get their hands on. Meanwhile, I was sitting in one corner observing what was going on. I had never been on the non-drinking side. I am always on the drinking team. I was excited and worried at the same time.
I was excited to see drunks from a fresh perspective, worried because things were quite uncertain.
When alcohol started to set in people, the real fun began. I remember two people dancing without any music. I don't think they realized that they were dancing to people's conversations-one person opening the window and singing at the top of his voice. I am sure it only entertained alley cats and disgruntled neighbors. One person was laughing at whatever was said in the room, irrespective of it being funny.
It wasn't easy to maintain my attention on any one of the shenanigans. My senses kept jumping from one activity to another. My brain, without the dull of alcohol, was having a hard time absorbing this much information.
Somewhere during the night after midnight, when all the available alcohol was finished, and people were not done, everybody set out to get more. One said, I have some at my place, but I need someone to accompany me. Everybody else raised their hands to help. One other said, I know a shop that will be open; we can buy from there. This time also everybody was ready to go to that shop.
Ultimately, the majority stood on the grounds of going to that friend's place, but everyone will accompany them. We were able to board public transport on the way to their place. Unfortunately, there was no public transport available while coming back.
Guess what the drunk crowd's suggestion was. Guess, guess!
We could have stayed at that friend's place, but the crowd demanded that we walk back to the original location. We walked for more than four kilometers at 1:30 AM. The drunks didn't realize it because the alcohol didn't let them, but I, the innocent sober chap, felt the cold of the night, the pain of walking that late during the night.
Somehow about an hour later, we all reached the original place. Yes, nobody went missing during that one-hour walk. I am amazed to this day at how it happened?
Nonetheless, the crowd now wants to play Pictionary. That ought to be fun when you are sober, and everyone else is drunk. It was amusing and frustrating to see drunks trying to decipher what you drew.
This lasted for a while. Some people's bodies gave up during the game, and they slept in their sitting position. On some, the effects of alcohol started to vanish. We wrapped up the party around six in the morning.
This experience made me realize that it can be fun to be sober at a drunk party. To this day, we talk about that night whenever we get together and how some people still don't remember their actions. However, it hasn't happened again, but I won't be opposed to being a part of such a party as a sober again.
Thank you for reading.
