Arsenal Welcomes Italy's Rising Star Riccardo Calafiori on Long-Term Deal

We're thrilled to announce that Italy international Riccardo Calafiori has joined us on a long-term contract from Serie A side Bologna! The 22-year-old defender, who was part of Italy’s squad at Euro 2024, had a standout season at Bologna, showcasing his skills at the heart of their defense.

Riccardo began his journey at Roma’s youth academy, where he honed his talents over 12 years before making his way to the first team. He gained valuable experience during a loan spell at Genoa in the 2021/22 season. In August 2022, Riccardo moved to Basel in Switzerland, where he quickly became a regular, making 26 league appearances that season. His impressive performances led him back to Italy, transferring to Bologna in August 2023.

Last season, Riccardo was a key figure in Bologna’s defense, emerging as one of the most consistent performers in Serie A. His contributions were instrumental in helping ‘I Rossoblu’ achieve an impressive fifth-place finish and secure Champions League qualification for the first time in 60 years. His strong performances were recognized with a call-up to the Euro 2024 squad and winning the Serie A Player of the Month award for May 2024.

“Riccardo has consistently demonstrated his talent for both club and country. His standout performances in Serie A last season and his strong showing for Italy in the Euros this summer speak volumes. Mikel and our coaching staff are eager to start working with him, and we all look forward to seeing him don the Arsenal shirt.”

Riccardo will wear the number 33 shirt and has already traveled to the US to join his new teammates in Philadelphia as we gear up for the 2024/25 season.

Jorginho, who has played alongside Riccardo, shared his thoughts on the new arrival: “Adding Riccardo to our squad is a great move. He’s a talented young player with a lot to offer. He’s professional, eager to learn, and humble—qualities that will be valuable for our team. I didn’t know him very well initially, but getting to know him up close has been fantastic. He has impressive qualities.

“I reached out to him during the Euro tournament and encouraged him to consider joining us. I truly believe this is the right place for him to reach the next level in his career. It’s wonderful to have him here, and we’ll do everything we can to help him feel at home and achieve great things together.”
