Are You Eccentric?

Eccentric is defined as something or someone who deviates from conventional or accepted usage or conduct.

Eccentrics Characteristics

Eccentrics deviate from an established or usual pattern or style. They see beauty and potential in things that others may overlook. Eccentrics have the ability to see things differently, in order to come up with innovative ideas and solutions.

Many eccentrics are highly creative individuals who express themselves through art, music, writing, or other forms of self-expression. They often have a vivid imagination and can think outside the box.

Eccentrics don't mind being alone in solitude. They are perfectly content with their thoughts and projects. They do not give up socializing with others sometimes, but they would rather be home focusing on their next creative project.

Eccentrics are naturally curious individuals who have a hunger for knowledge in various subjects. They constantly explore new topics, and learn new skills just for the sake of expanding their minds. Their thirst for knowledge knows no bounds.

The Relevant Question

Are writers and especially poets essentric?

“Eccentric” in the realm of poets and writers doesn’t mean erratic or strange. It means centered elsewhere. It means living from the soul’s orbit rather than society’s.

Eccentric: A Blessing or a Burden

Being “eccentric” or soul-centric is often both a blessing and a burden. It’s the gift of seeing differently, feeling deeply, and creating from places others might never visit. But it also means walking paths others don't understand, carrying stories that don’t fit into tidy boxes, and sometimes feeling profoundly alone.

Eccentrics experience the blessing of hearing what others miss. They can create beauty from almost all things. Eccentrics walk in paths that the average person never dare to venture. They live with a poetic depth that transform their lives.

Eccentrics also experience the burden of feeling misunderstood. They carry an emotional weight others don't recognize. They often long for friendships and other relationships that match their way of thinking and creating.

Being an eccentric is not a flaw. Instead, it is a gift. Eccentrics honor solitude as sacred. They feel deeply and write from that depth. Eccentrics write in poetry rhythm, even when the world moves only in prose.

Some people are called eccentric because of their artistic talents, and I am among them. Our eccentric group includes artists, musicians, writers, and especially poets. I am a writer, and I have been labeled "eccentric."

Initially, I treated that label as a negative. Today, I celebrate and honor the gift. Yes, I am different, but that is not a flaw. It is my fingerprint. It's in my DNA. I make my living by being an eccentric writer, and I celebrate my creativity and my differences. I honor the way I listen, the way I linger, and the way I love.

I don't mind it when family members, friends, co-workers and my critics call me eccentric. I embrace the fact that I was created by divine design to be creative, to walk in my own path while being eccentric.

Eccentrics should be celebrated instead of rejected because we offer a lot to society. Many of our positive characteristics include:

  • intelligent
  • creative
  • nonconforming
  • curious enough to search for answers
  • strives to make the world a better place
  • goes out of the way to make people happy
  • never bored because of their many hobbies
  • aware of their eccentricity
  • doesn't rely on others for their happiness
  • desires are not in sync with many others

Based on the above characteristics of being eccentric, then "Yes, I am eccentric."

Quote About Writers

Here is a quote about writers:

"It's no secret that writers, as a species, are a little bit off. It takes a different sort of mind to spend so much time lost in imaginary worlds, and sometimes that strangeness comes out into everyday life. That's especially true for the best and most famous authors."

Famous Writers

Many famous writers had eccentric habits.

  • Henry David Thoreau stayed in solitude in the woods in a small cabin over two years to write his famous work On Walden Pond.
  • Emily Dickinson rarely left her home, yet her inner world was vast and luminous.
  • James Joyce liked writing in bed while on his stomach. And so do I.
