As the new year begins I find myself desiring to create a more sustainable lifestyle for myself and my children. Not a New Year's Resolution, or even a goal, but something, somewhere inside of me feels an imperative to live a more sustainable life.
Perhaps it's a response to the environmental devastation and climate emergency witnessed globally in 2020 or the time in lockdown to reflect and re-align with my own values.
Well I know I can't change the world on my own and in the past I would feel so overwhelmed by the state of the climate that it really seemed easier to stick my head in the sand. But now, despite not knowing what tangible results I am hoping for, it is my hope and intention that my small actions will add up with the small actions of others and make a difference in the world.
And even if that doesn't happen, I will at least know that I tried, that I made an effort for our planet and future generations. I will know that I valued myself enough to align the actions of my daily life with my beliefs.
I am starting with three small changes to reduce plastic waste;
Firstly, I am reducing plastic waste by switching from disposable razors to a reusable razor. I chose this one by Remington https://www.remingtonproducts.com/products/womens/hair-removal/electric-shavers/wdf5030-smooth-glide-rechargeable-shaver.aspx
I have found some great sets of beeswax wraps and I am really looking forward to using these fun prints to reduce my need for cling wrap and cut out sandwich bag use altogether. I eat sandwiches for convenience rather than enjoyment and I am expecting that the fun of the beeswax wraps will make sandwiches feel like less of a workplace chore.
Lastly, I am going to invest in some fun reusable bags. I have plenty of reusable Woolies plastic bags but I somehow always forget them and leave them in the car. I also have a couple of plain reusable bags that I am also always forgetting about. I guess that I have always had a reluctance towards using these bags - it's felt like one more thing to remember in an already busy day. Time to get on board and see reusable bags as an ally. Since these bags will save me some money, I guess it's time to invest in ones I am going to enjoy using.
I would love to hear your ideas on how to live a more sustainable life and your experiences in implementing sustainable changes to your lifestyle.
