7 days Kilimanjaro climbing itinerary via the Lemosho Route
7 days Lemosho Route

Here’s a detailed 7-day Kilimanjaro climbing itinerary via the Lemosho Route, which is known for its scenic beauty and longer acclimatization period, offering a higher chance of successfully reaching the summit:
Day 1: Londorossi Gate to Mti Mkubwa Camp (2,650m)
The adventure begins with a drive from your hotel to Londorossi Gate (2,100 meters), where you'll complete the necessary registration and park formalities. Afterward, you’ll embark on a scenic hike through the rainforest to reach Mti Mkubwa Camp (2,650 meters). The hike typically takes about 3-4 hours and is relatively easy, offering beautiful views of the forest with the chance to spot some wildlife. Once you arrive at camp, enjoy a warm meal and settle in for the night in preparation for the next day's journey. Dinner and overnight at Mti Mkubwa Camp.
Day 2: Mti Mkubwa Camp to Shira 1 Camp (3,600m)
After breakfast, you’ll continue your trek, leaving the rainforest behind as you enter the moorland zone. The trail begins to ascend gradually as you head toward Shira 1 Camp (3,600 meters), located on the Shira Plateau. The hike takes around 5-6 hours, and the landscape becomes more open and arid as you gain altitude. The views of Mount Kilimanjaro and the surrounding landscape are spectacular, with a unique mix of volcanic terrain and alpine plants. Once at camp, you’ll have the opportunity to rest, take in the surroundings, and enjoy a nutritious meal. Overnight at Shira 1 Camp.
Day 3: Shira 1 Camp to Shira 2 Camp (3,900m)
Day 3 is a relatively short hike of about 3-4 hours from Shira 1 Camp to Shira 2 Camp (3,900 meters). You’ll pass through more open moorland with stunning views of the summit. This day is designed to help with acclimatization, giving you time to adjust to the altitude. The route is not particularly steep, and the pace is easy to moderate. Once at Shira 2 Camp, you’ll have time to relax and enjoy the vastness of the plateau. This evening is a good opportunity to explore the surroundings or simply take it easy and hydrate. Dinner and overnight at Shira 2 Camp.
Day 4: Shira 2 Camp to Barranco Camp (3,950m)
On Day 4, you’ll start your trek by ascending toward the Lava Tower (4,630 meters), an impressive volcanic feature on the mountain. From Lava Tower, you’ll descend to Barranco Camp (3,950 meters), passing through a variety of ecosystems, including the alpine desert. The hike will take about 6-7 hours, and you’ll gain and lose altitude throughout the day, which is excellent for acclimatization. The descent to Barranco Camp helps your body adjust to the higher altitude while still gaining the necessary elevation. Barranco Camp is located near the famous Barranco Wall, which will be your challenge on the following day. After a good day of trekking, you’ll enjoy dinner and overnight at Barranco Camp.
Day 5: Barranco Camp to Barafu Camp (4,640m)
Day 5 is a more strenuous day, starting with the climb of the Barranco Wall (about 400 meters), which is a steep, rocky ascent but not technical. It’s a short but challenging section that rewards you with stunning views of the mountain and surrounding landscape. After summiting the Barranco Wall, the path becomes easier as you continue your ascent through the alpine desert toward Barafu Camp (4,640 meters), your final camp before the summit. The hike takes about 7-8 hours, and as you near Barafu, you’ll notice the landscape becoming increasingly barren and rocky. At Barafu Camp, take time to rest, hydrate, and prepare for the summit attempt. You’ll have an early dinner and rest for a few hours before your summit push. Overnight at Barafu Camp.
Day 6: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak and Descend to Mweka Camp (5,895m – 3,100m)
The final day is an intense and rewarding day. You’ll begin your summit attempt in the middle of the night (around 11:00 PM or midnight) to allow enough time for the long ascent. The hike to Uhuru Peak (5,895 meters) will take about 7-8 hours. The path to the summit follows the Rongai Route, and you’ll ascend through sand and scree until you reach the Stella Point (5,756 meters) on the crater rim. From there, it’s another 1-hour walk to the summit. Once you reach Uhuru Peak, you’ll have a chance to take photos, celebrate your accomplishment, and enjoy the panoramic views.
After reaching the summit, you’ll begin your descent back to Barafu Camp (4,640 meters), which will take around 3 hours. From Barafu, continue descending to Mweka Camp (3,100 meters), where you’ll rest for the night. The descent to Mweka Camp takes about 4-5 hours. Enjoy a well-earned dinner and overnight at Mweka Camp.
Day 7: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate (3,100m – 1,640m)
On the final day, you’ll descend from Mweka Camp back to Mweka Gate (1,640 meters), a 3-4 hour trek through the lush rainforest. As you descend, you’ll notice the change in vegetation and have the chance to reflect on your achievement. Once at Mweka Gate, you’ll complete the necessary exit procedures and receive your summit certificates based on whether you reached Stella Point or Uhuru Peak. Afterward, a vehicle will transfer you to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha to celebrate your success and relax.
