During the interview, Don Jazzy was asked "How do you feel about people only knowing you produce but not knowing you've written on a lot of songs" He responded saying:
DON JAZZY: So, my thing is I pretty much have only co-written with artistes that are signed under my record label. We are pretty much partners at that point. We are trying to get hit songs. So whether na you write, whether na them write, at the end of the day, the goal is the goal. So, for somebody like me now, I think it's easier because I'm already earning as the owner of the label and I can also earn as the producer. So, I didn't necessarily need to take credit for writing or joining to write some of the songs.
And then considering that I also know that it's a sensitive topic for most of the artistes, it's just now that we are all getting more aware of how global music works to understand that as an artiste, what you bring to the table is a lot. As an artiste, it's not beans. I no fit be artiste, do you understand? Me personally, I no fit do what you can do. So most artistes need to understand that whether somebody else writes the song or not, there is no way you can translate or communicate this music as much as me, the artiste. Whether na my vocal, whether na my personality, or my likeness that just added to those lyrics that you put.
So, for me, I think considering that I was already the record label owner and producer, it was easy for me to let go of the credit for writing. So I would understand when most writers don't feel appreciated enough for the contributions that they've done. But I think it's something that everybody needs to understand.
Speaking about what male artistes can learn from female artistes like Ayra Starr and Tiwa Savage, Don Jazzy continued:
DON JAZZY: Artistes need to understand that I am me, which is what I give somebody like Ayra Starr credit for, somebody like Tiwa Savage as well. I think the female artistes, they are confident in their artistry and themselves, that they don't mind if somebody writes a song or a verse for them. They don't mind giving credits. But most of the guys, they feel shy about it. I don't know why they feel shy that somebody is helping them to write. And then some of the fans that are not educated enough also come on social media to poke fun saying 'you wey no dey write your song' And so what? The sky is big for everybody to fly. The writer wrote something, I put my touch on it, you heard it, you loved it, we move on.
