'Yellowjackets' Season 3: Who Really Burned Down the Cabin?
The premiere of the third season suggests Coach Ben didn't do it. But if he didn't, then who did?

One of the many burning (excuse the pun) questions left in the Yellowjackets season 2 finale was, why did Coach Ben burn down the cabin? Not only that, but would the girls find out that it was him who did it? With this weekend's premiere of season 3, fan theories have been turned upside down as the show suggests that Coach Ben wasn't the one who did it.
What happened after the cabin burned down?
Season 3 starts with a slight fast-forward in both realms as it's now Spring for the teenagers and 6-weeks have gone by for the adults. After the cabin burned down and left the teenagers stranded in Winter with no food or shelter, it is revealed that they fed the very fire that burned their wilderness home to stay alive. Not only that, but they managed to build themselves new shelters, along with beginning a small farm to provide food. However, that all came with the assumption that their surviving coach was the one who burned down their shelter and tried to kill them.
This theory by both the show's characters and fans was shaken up after Mari fell into a makeshift trap that Ben setup in the woods. He reveals to her that he has been hiding from them and he implied that he did not burn down the cabin - despite being seen with matches outside in the season 2 finale. He even says to Mari, "What are you talking about? The cabin burned down?"

Now... it is very possible that Ben is lying. In my opinion, it's still pretty liked that Ben is lying. With the revelation that the girls managed to keep the fire alive for almost two full weeks, you would think that he would have smelled it. Even being underground, you think he would have smelled burning wood. Not only that, he didn't seem to have any reservations about taking supplies from them from the beginning of his separation. If he tried to return to the cabin to steal from them, he would have noticed that it was on fire and/or gone entirely and the girls had moved on.
The biggest implication is the fact that Natalie seems to know where he's been hiding and/or has seen him already. Ben had confronted Natalie about the direction the group was going prior to the cabin's destruction, so their tensions were already high. Not only that, but they no doubt had ideas that they needed to be mindful of each other.
If Ben didn't burn down the cabin, who did?

Aside from Ben, the list of people who could have burned down the cabin is pretty short. Unless there are still outsiders in the wilderness that we haven't seen yet, the only people were inside of the cabin the night it burned. There have been a lot of signs that the girls either aren't alone or that they're closer to civilization than they think, but we haven't had any confirmations yet.
One theory floating around online already is that there is a group of survivalists, or a native tribe, that witnessed the girls' "Queen of Hearts" game and tried to eliminate them by burning their shelter. After all, Shauna was outside for quite sometime dismembering Javi's corpse. If there are other people in the area, they might have witnessed it and got scared.
Another theory comes after Ben's discovery of the survivalist materials buried in the infamous pit. The rations, supplies, and other items seemed to have been untouched, leading some to believe they were a secret stockpile for the dead cabin guy. However, they could belong to someone else in the vicinity who is living just like the dead man was prior to his demise.

Without introducing brand new characters or storylines, the most obvious culprit is Taissa. With her "evil" alter ego, it is 100% possible that she was sleepwalking and set the cabin on fire. After all, Taissa was standing by the back door when Shauna smelled smoke and frantically woke everyone up. It's also unlikely that some random person who hadn't been living in the cabin would know how to lock all of the doors and leave without being detected.
