We all are or at least most of us are aware of the legends of Big Foot, the yeti, the Loch Ness monster, and the Chupacabra.

You might have heard about the Mothman and the Jersey Devil too.

Many towns have their own legend of a cryptid creature that lurks and remains elusive. Some locals might even claim to have seen it. West Virginia has the Mothman and Scotland has the famous Loch Ness (Nessie) monster.

Have you ever heard of these strange unexplained creatures? I know I haven’t.

The Grassman

Ohio, U.S.

Half man. Half grass. Well not quite.

It can be hard to determine whether the sightings are of the Grassman, Bigfoot, or some other similar bigfoot like creature.

This upright, bipedal hominoid has an appearance similar to Bigfoot. It stands approximately 6–7 feet tall and has either black, grey, or brown hair/fur. Very similar to Bigfoot.

One notable description about the Grassman is it’s strong odor. It’s claimed to have a horrendously foul smell like something rotting.

It’s claimed to be more aggressive than Bigfoot so if you find yourself in the woods of Ohio and think you’ve seen one, use extreme caution!

The Goatman

Maryland, Louisiana, and Texas

Legend has it that a half man, half goat hominoid creature lurks the woods of Maryland, Louisiana, and Texas. The goatman is said to stand about 7 feet tall with an upper body of that of a man with two protruding horns and a lower body of a goat. If that wasn’t sinister enough, its eyes are said to glow red.

Sightings of the strange creature go back thousands and thousands of years tracing all the way back to 520 BCE in ancient Greece. The more current sightings have occurred from the 1970’s to the present in the U.S.

There are numerous versions to legends of what the Goatman actually is. Some say he is the ghost of a goat farmer seeking vengeance for his herd that were killed by teenage kids. Another legend says it was a scientific experiment gone horribly wrong.

The Hopkinsville Goblins

Kentucky, U.S.

Okay, I have heard of this one but I don’t think it’s as well known. Plus, it’s one of my favorite legends.

The Hopkinsville Goblin sightings are described to be more of a close encounters with aliens rather than cryptids.

On August 21, 1955, a family on a small farm in Hopkinsville, Kentucky had an encounter so bizarre and unsettling, it would not only change their life but change how we imagine aliens forever. It’s likely where we got the term, “little green men”.

It was 7 pm and one of the family members came from outside and swore he might have just seen a UFO. Of course, the other family members laughed him off.

About an hour later, the family dogs began barking excessively. Suspicious, the family glanced out the window to see a strange hominoid like figure in their backyard.

The alien creatures were described by the terrified witnesses as standing 2 to 3 feet tall with glowing yellow eyes, long pointed ears, and long limbs. According to witnesses, a nose was nonexistent on these creatures.

Completely terrified, a few reached for the shot guns and began shooting at the strange alien creatures. Their shots did nothing. More and more of these strange creatures approached the farm house and those that carried rifles, kept firing.

To their horror and confusion, the bullets didn’t even affect these alien creatures. Unsure of what to do, the family managed to flee and report their unusual incident to the town sheriff. Of course, as you might expect, an extensive search turned up nothing.

This story makes me want to double check and make sure my curtains and blinds are pulled closed at night!

I'd say just about anywhere has a tale of an elusive cryptid. Maybe your town even has one!
