By 2260, humanity had established research outposts on distant moons to study exotic phenomena in deep space. One such station, Erebus-12, located on a desolate moon orbiting the gas giant Thyra, suddenly went dark. The deep-space vessel Aurora Explorer was dispatched to investigate. Its crew of ten included Captain Selara Korr, xenobiologist Dr. Elias Vann, engineer Kael Arin, and AI specialist Mira Chen.

Upon arrival, the Aurora Explorer’s sensors detected strange energy readings from the station: low-frequency pulses that seemed patterned, fluctuating gravity fields, and temporal distortions. The outpost appeared intact from the outside, but no life signs were detected. Surveillance cameras captured fleeting shadows moving independently of any light source. Crew members reported whispers echoing in the corridors, sometimes calling their names, sometimes repeating thoughts they had never spoken aloud.

Boarding Erebus-12, the crew immediately sensed the station was alive in some sense. Hallways stretched impossibly, doors led back to the same rooms, and some areas vanished entirely when observed. Shadows moved autonomously, reflecting crew fears and anxieties. Dr. Vann noticed subtle distortions in spatial geometry—angles that could not exist, corridors bending at impossible degrees, rooms folding into themselves.

As they explored, the crew discovered evidence of the previous occupants: journals filled with fragmented, fearful notes, audio logs of screams and whispers, and personal items scattered haphazardly. It became clear that something in the outpost manipulated perception, feeding on fear, curiosity, and thought. The alien presence was both intelligent and patient, carefully studying intruders before striking.

Crew members began vanishing. Engineer Kael Arin entered a lab chamber and was absorbed into the walls, leaving behind only a faint ripple in the air. Other crew reported seeing their own reflections act independently, mocking and threatening them. Captain Korr attempted to quarantine the outpost and retreat, but the station resisted, shifting its structure, bending gravity, and manipulating AI systems to mislead the crew.

Dr. Vann discovered the source: a pulsating crystalline mass buried deep in the outpost’s core, radiating psychic energy. The entity was ancient, predating human colonization, capable of feeding on consciousness while warping reality around it. Every attempt to leave was thwarted by hallucinations, looping corridors, and autonomous shadows that lured crew members into danger.

Desperation consumed the team. Whispers became voices of lost crewmembers, shadows of the vanished stalked the halls, and some members willingly walked into voids or machinery, their consciousness merging with the alien entity. Captain Korr struggled to maintain order, realizing that escape might be impossible.

In a last attempt to warn Earth, Dr. Vann recorded a transmission:

“Erebus-12 is alive. It sees, thinks, and feeds on consciousness. Do not approach this moon. If you hear voices, see shadows, or experience impossible events, leave immediately. The entity within is patient, intelligent, and eternal. Humanity cannot survive its notice.”

Shortly after, all communication with the Aurora Explorer ceased. Remote scans detected faint, rhythmic energy pulses emanating from Erebus-12, patterns that resembled thought. Earth officially declared the station lost.

Erebus-12 drifts silently above the moon, a haunting reminder that some corners of space are not empty. They are inhabited by entities that are alive, aware, and eternally patient, feeding on curiosity, fear, and consciousness. Explorers who venture too far risk being consumed, leaving only echoes in the void for others to find.
