Wonderful History...

"The Unseen Walls"

James sat in his tiny, dark apartment, alone with the distant noises of city traffic and the hum of the refrigerator. He was a guy of routine: get up at seven, work until five, eat dinner, and then watch TV until he fell asleep. He had a quiet life, but not because he liked to be by himself. No, it was fear that caused it.

James had lived inside walls he could not see but could feel every day for as long as he could remember. Although he was not inherently shy, he felt stuck when it comes to social interaction. He was able to work, go to family events, and even engage in discussion. But everything seemed to be far away and out of his grasp because of the constant weight and oppressive presence that seemed to be all about him.

Brick by brick, the walls have been rising in height over the years. They were elevated by his dread of failure, rejection, and condemnation. It was impossible for him to visit a café without feeling as though everyone was watching him closely. He was unable to go to social gatherings without withdrawing inward, worrying if people were seeing how uncomfortable he was. His life had devolved into a set of meticulously honed rituals, all aimed at avoiding any circumstance that would expose him.

However, something had changed recently. He was no longer able to ignore the walls; they no longer seemed like a natural part of him. He felt as if they were closing in on him, making it harder for him to breathe. He was aware that something had to give, but he was unsure of what.

After another day of feeling stuck in his own thoughts, James decided to go for a stroll one rainy evening to get his thoughts straight. His footsteps reverberated in the deserted sidewalks as he roamed aimlessly around the streets. He saw an elderly woman sitting by herself on a bench as he passed a tiny park. There was something about the way she sat there, as if the world had no control over her, that made her appear out of place, not because she was old.

James, intrigued, walked over to her.

His voice was hesitant as he said, "Is the rain upsetting you?"

The woman smiled softly as she turned to face him. "Nope," she answered. "Does not the rain have a beat of its own?"

James nodded, but he could not understand her meaning. His mind was restless, and he had spent the last hour pacing in circles. He was attracted by this woman's composure for some reason. As the rain gently fell around them, he sat on the seat next her.

"Have you ever felt that you are stuck in your own thoughts?" Before he could stop himself, James blurted out. Despite his racing heart, he felt secure because of the woman.

After pausing, the woman turned to look at him. Despite her kindness, there was a depth to her gaze, as if she fully grasped his meaning. "Whether we realize it or not, I believe we all erect barriers around ourselves," she remarked quietly. However, those walls are frequently only delusions. Although they give us the impression that we are stuck, the door is actually always open.

Unsure of what to say, James just stared at her. "How can you overcome them, though?"

The woman's eyes glistened with comprehension as she smiled once more. "You begin by acknowledging that the walls exist to prevent you from living fully, not to protect you. Recognizing that you have the ability to leave things behind is the first step. Although it is not simple, it is feasible.

James experienced a glimmer of hope for the first time in a long time. It seemed genuine, even though it was neither a profound realization or a life-changing insight. The barriers might not have been as impenetrable as he believed. Perhaps they were only a portion of him, not his entire identity.

James stood up and whispered softly, "Thank you." The world appeared to soften around him, and the rain had begun to slow.

The woman's smile was all the response he needed, but she did not say anything else.

James made little adjustments to his life over the course of the following few months. He began stepping outside of his comfort zone by asking a coworker out to coffee, going to social gatherings without an excuse, and coming to believe that if he let himself be vulnerable, the world would not end. Every time he did, he sensed a slight movement in the walls.

It was not immediate, and on some days the walls' weight felt oppressive once more. However, James discovered with each step that his own conviction that he could not escape was the one thing that had ever held him captive. Although he had constructed the barriers, he also possessed the ability to knock them down.

James discovered one day that he had not given the walls any regard in weeks as he was seated in his favorite café. He did not know when they had completely fallen apart, but he was certain that the life he was leading now—one that was connected, open, and active—was the one he had always desired.

And James felt very free for the first time in his life.
