The Unseen Tenant

When Your Dream Home Becomes a Nightmaregoat

By Charles NwitePublished 3 years ago 5 min read

Sophie had always loved old houses. There was something magical about the creaking floorboards and the peeling wallpaper. So, when she stumbled upon the rundown Victorian in the heart of the city, she knew it was the one. It was perfect.

Sophie spent months fixing it up, bringing it back to its former glory. She painted the walls, refinished the floors, and even installed a clawfoot tub. It was her dream home, and she loved every inch of it.

But, as the weeks went by, Sophie started to feel like she wasn't alone in the house. Little things would happen that she couldn't explain. Doors would open on their own, and sometimes she would hear strange noises coming from the walls.

At first, she thought it was just her imagination, but then the text messages started.

"I miss you," the first one read.

Sophie was confused. She didn't recognize the number.

"Who is this?" she replied.

"An admirer," the response came.

Sophie was getting creeped out, but she tried to stay calm.

"How can you miss someone that you don't know?" she asked.

"Oh, I know all about you. I live in your home," the text came back.

Sophie's heart skipped a beat. It was impossible. She lived alone. There was no one else in the house.

"I don't understand what you're trying to say. I live by myself in a house I remade," she typed.

"Yes, these things I know. I love what you've done. But you've been gone too long, out with your friends having fun," the reply said.

Sophie was starting to panic. How did this person know so much about her?

"How did you know what I've been up to?" she asked.

"Because I live in your walls, and I sleep next to you," the text said.

Sophie's blood ran cold. She didn't know what to do. She tried to call the police, but they didn't take her seriously. They thought it was just a prank.

So, Sophie decided to take matters into her own hands. She started searching the house, trying to find any evidence of someone else living there. She checked every closet, every crawl space, and even the attic. But she found nothing.

Days turned into weeks, and Sophie started to feel like she was losing her mind. The text messages continued, always from the same number, always with the same eerie tone.

Then, one night, Sophie woke up to a noise coming from the wall next to her bed. She could hear someone breathing on the other side.

"Who's there?" she called out, her voice shaking.

No response.

"Please, if you're there, just leave me alone," she begged.

Still no response.

Sophie didn't know what to do. She was trapped in her own home, and she didn't feel safe anymore. She tried to leave, but the doors were locked from the outside. She was stuck.

The next morning, Sophie woke up to a new text message.

"I'm sorry," it read. "I didn't mean to scare you. I just wanted to be close to you. I love you."

Sophie felt sick. She didn't know what to do. She didn't know how to get out.

Then, a voice came from the wall.

"Please, Sophie. I love you. Let me out."

Sophie didn't know what to do. She was torn between fear and sympathy. She didn't want to leave this person trapped in the wall, but she didn't want to be near them either.

In the end, Sophie made a choice. She called a contractor and had them tear down the wall. And there As the contractor broke down the wall, Sophie held her breath. She didn't know what to expect. But when the wall finally crumbled, she saw something that she could never have imagined.

There was a small room hidden inside the wall. It was barely big enough for a person to stand in, but it was filled with blankets, pillows, and pictures of Sophie. There was a small chair in the corner, and a bucket for a toilet.

Sophie gasped in horror. She couldn't believe what she was seeing. She looked closer at the pictures, and she realized that they were all taken from inside her home. This person had been watching her, studying her, for who knows how long.

Then she saw him. He was huddled in the corner, covered in dirt and grime. He looked up at her with pleading eyes.

Sophie felt a wave of compassion wash over her. She realized that this person was not a threat, but a victim. He had been living in her walls for who knows how long, and she didn't even know he existed.

She called the police, and they took the man away. He was malnourished and dehydrated, but he was alive. He told the police his name was David, and he had been living in the wall for over a year.

Sophie was shocked. She couldn't believe that something like this could happen to her. She felt violated, but she also felt grateful that she had found David before it was too late.

The next few days were a blur. The police investigated, and they found that David had a history of mental illness. He had been homeless and looking for shelter when he stumbled upon Sophie's home. He had broken in and made himself at home in the walls, watching Sophie's every move.

Sophie didn't know what to do next. She felt violated, but she also felt guilty. She had never suspected that someone could be living in her walls, and she had never taken the time to really look for anything out of the ordinary.

But as the days went by, Sophie started to heal. She hired a team to fix the wall and make her home safe again. She installed a security system and made sure to check every corner of her house for anything unusual.

And then, one day, Sophie received a letter in the mail. It was from David. He apologized for what he had done, and he thanked her for saving his life. He said that he never meant to scare her, and that he had just wanted to be close to her.

Sophie didn't know what to make of the letter. She didn't know if she could forgive David, but she did feel a sense of closure. She realized that sometimes, the things that scare us the most can also teach us the most important lessons.

Sophie never forgot what happened to her, but she also never let it define her. She continued to live in her dream home, but she also made sure to keep her eyes open for anything unusual. She knew that her home was more than just four walls, and she would do anything to protect it.
