The Underground Water Fairy River

By Sherry Anne Podolchuk

There was a deep and cold well on a little prairie farm in the town of Elma east of Winnipeg. The cavern to the water ran to an underground river that flowed under the farm. The cavern was filled with lush vegetation with bright colours and sweet tasting fruit. Crystals grew on the walls of the cavern that shone the light need to maintain life in the underground river. In that realm there were creatures that dwelled; water faries that swam and sang, they had bright purple hair and green eyes. They wore gowns of spider and butterfly silk the sparkled when the sun shone on them. The water faries also cast spells and danced around among the flowers. The water faries also played tricks on the inhabitants above. They would call to the surface dwellers to jump in the water to play with them, the underground river creatures were very curious and had to be managed from time to time by the Deamonfairy. The Deamonfairy family that lived on the surface above were diligent workers and readers of books of all kinds. They loved their little life and always worked for the betterment of the community. They were aware of the netherworld around and below them; ghastly creatures that could tell your fortune or show you’re the end of a rainbow. Ghosts and goblins and deamons lived together in their dark world of friendship. There was a little Deamonfairy named Ivan that lived on the farm with his parents and siblings. Ivan had emerald green eyes and blonde hair, a very happy boy that loved his family. He would do chores and of course play. Ivan would go with Olga and Peter his parents to the well to fetch water and talk to the creatures below. They would walk down the path in the front yard to the well and open the lid to get the water. The bucket was on a lever that lifted the bucket up when full. In the winter time they would have to break the surface ice to get the water out. The water was fresh and energetic, giving them light; happiness. One day Ivan went to the well with Olga and Peter, they were enjoying a beautiful summer day and hauling the bucket up. A voice came from the well whispering all their names and beckoning the Deamonfairy into the water, they were all listening and the whispers turned into singing that they could not stop thinking about the tones made them sleepy and said “come hither all who drink of our well.” All of a sudden Ivan fell in to the well and the underground river creatures were swimming around him still singing. Ivan splashed around and the Deamonfairys worked together by making sure Ivan was safe, they tricked the underground creatures by singing their own song; “Netherworld creatures sing our praise we are the Deamonfairy.” The creature from down below became obedient to the Deamonfairy. The water fairy creatures swam up and helped Ivan above the water as they sang songs of friendship. Ivan then quickly grabbed the pump hose that was in the well to pull himself out. The creatures below cheered as Ivan came to the top of the well and on to dry land, Olga and Peter hugged him. The new friendship between the Deamonfairy and the underground river creatures was celebrated throughout the community of Elma. The underground water creatures went to sing their friendship song to all the villagers and they were praised. The darkness became the light with the song that Ivan, Olga and Peter sang.
