The Timekeeper
Inspiration from Edgar Allan Poe Date: 11-11-2020 By: Trinity C.
Ah, yes the softness of his skull was my favorite sound. Nothing like the feel of someone new at my fingertips. He looked so innocent just sitting there. A statue greatly posed. So limply placed upon his throne. It had to be done. For every time he gazed at me with those eyes. A shiver sent up my spine. As to what I held to my surprise. His lifeless eyes bluster within my soul. Judgmental from the great beyond. I am sane, it's dreadfully so. But in life those eyes were never kind. It haunts me, I must hide him. Blood from every orifice fills his face. I must hide him soon before neighbors catch foul play. I need his hideous eyes to go away. Ah, but his beauty was here to stay. Where oh where must you go. Stuffed in the grandfather clock. Tick tock, the time flies by. I had only seconds left. I pushed his heavy body in the ticking tower. He will not stay, so stubborn I must say. I proceeded to tape it shut. All in time for a knock at my chamber door. Hurriedly placing a cloth on my prize. With a deep breath, I opened my door.
There had stood in a lengthy pair. Sheriff and Deputy, I knew for years. Keep calm, keep calm and smile. They know nothing of his eyes. Cold wind of autumn night had brushed past my door. “May we come in to look around” they said with a shivering concern. Ah yes, I have nothing to hide. I began my lie. Touring each room, with nothing to be seen. We had laughed like olden days. As we then approached the clock. Tick. Tock. Tick. Tock. Seconds to minutes, my heart began to stop. What if they are to discover these hellbent eyes. Discovering all my lies. THERE, THERE on the floor. Next to the deputy’s foot. Red, red, a sea of red. Pouring out every crack. With no prevail they watch me pale. Can they not see the sea of red? Have I gone mad? Calm myself, breath, they know nothing of this lie. Tick. Tock. Tick.
Minutes turn to an hour. “ Miss, you look sick.” as the Sheriff patted my head. “I'm okay, it's but allergies taking my breath,” I smile so wide. Heaviness had begun to set upon my chest. I can not take it anymore. Blood still seeping through the floorboards. They sat me down on the same chair he posed in. The very chair he wept in. Ah, only the greatest irony of my life. I was faced towards the ticking time bomb. They are suspecting I’ve gone mad. There the sound as the body shifts. It was too late. Flopped upon the porous oak floor, laid the beautiful dead man. In a sudden fashion I stood in a rush, as laughter flew pass my throat. “ I MUST CONFESS, his beauty is astounding though his face is twisted in fury, his eyes that scared me so.. I laid wasted to his precious body. For in defense, it was his eyes...” And on that day they took me aside, locked away the key. Never again to see such horrors. Forever safely compressed with time.
