The Singing Janitor – A Midnight Melody You’ll Never Forget
It was supposed to be just another school camp… until we heard someone humming an old love song in an empty hallway at 2 a.m.
School camps are supposed to be fun. Games, ghost stories, late-night snacks, and sleeping in uncomfortable bunk beds — the usual stuff. But on one particular night during our camp at a remote countryside school, something happened that none of us will ever forget.
It started with a song.
A song no one wanted to hear.
At 2 a.m.
The Humming Begins
I was in a room with my three usual partners-in-crime — Faiz, Dani, and Amar. We were just about to fall asleep when we heard it:
“La la laaaa… my little darling…”
A woman’s voice, soft and echoing, drifting in from the corridor.
We froze. Dani sat up straight, eyes wide open.
“Did you guys hear that?”
Yes. We all did.
Our dormitory was on the top floor of the old block — the one the seniors warned us about. It used to be the nurses’ quarters, they said. Decades ago. Of course, no one believed them. Until that moment.
The Footsteps
Faiz, the brave one (so he claimed), crept to the door and cracked it open. The hallway was dimly lit… and empty.
But we could hear it now. Not just the humming, but footsteps.
Swish. Swish. Swish.
Sweeping. Someone was sweeping the floor.
Faiz turned back to us, pale. “There’s no one there, but the sound’s getting louder.”
That’s when the humming stopped.
And a few seconds later, there were three loud knocks on our door.
BANG. BANG. BANG.
Do. Not. Open. That. Door.
Let me be clear — none of us moved. We did what every group of brave young men would do in this situation: we pulled our blankets over our heads and whispered prayers like we were suddenly very religious.
After about ten minutes, the sound faded. The knocking stopped. And the hallway fell silent again.
We didn’t sleep that night. Even Faiz gave up pretending he was brave.
Morning “Relief”
The next morning, still shaken, we told our teacher about the strange humming and knocking.
She just chuckled. “Oh, that’s probably just the janitor,” she said. “Some of them like to clean at night. Nothing to be scared of.”
Right. Nothing at all.
Except… something didn’t feel right.
The Twist
Later that afternoon, we saw a janitor sweeping leaves outside the hall. Hoping for answers, we walked up to her.
“Hi, were you cleaning upstairs last night?”
She gave us a confused look.
“Upstairs? No one’s allowed up there at night. Ever since... that incident.”
“What incident?” we asked.
She hesitated.
“Two years ago, the night janitor — Miss Zahara — had a heart attack while working late on the top floor. She passed away before anyone found her. She used to sing old love songs while she cleaned. Some say… she still does.”
She walked away, leaving us speechless.
So… Who Was at the Door?
After that, Amar started wearing earplugs to every camp. Dani developed a strange habit of humming nervously whenever it got too quiet. And Faiz? He never opened a door at night without knocking first.
As for me? Let’s just say I never sleep near hallways anymore.
Final Thought
Some ghosts scream.
Some howl.
But the creepiest ones?
They clean quietly...
They hum your favorite melody when you're alone…
They knock politely, like they’re just doing their job.
And when you peek outside?
There’s no one there —
Only the faint smell of floor cleaner…
and a song that keeps playing in your head,
long after you’ve left the school.
So next time you hear someone humming at night —
Don’t sing along.
Because some janitors…
never really stop working.
