The Shadow of the Yellow Paper

When Your Dreams Haunt You from the Edge of Death

Prologue: The Paper That Changed Everything

In a small apartment in central Cairo, Youssef (an ambitious graphic designer in his twenties) worked for hours on a project that could change his life—an advertising campaign to compete with major corporations. His wife Sarah, a nurse, tried to convince him to attend a family party with her:

"Youssef, this opportunity won’t come again. My family is waiting for us!"

But he refused, pointing to his computer screen: "This chance might not repeat itself. I’ll catch up with you later!"

He didn’t know that a sudden gust of wind from the open apartment window would carry away the yellow paper containing all his ideas and notes, tossing it to the edge of the balcony. From that moment, his journey into a world of horror and suspense began—one he could never have imagined.

Chapter 1: The First Danger—On the Edge of the Balcony

Youssef decided to risk retrieving the paper, climbing onto the narrow balcony of the tenth floor. Here, the first wave of suspense begins as he faces:

Fear of heights: Looking down and seeing cars and pedestrians like tiny ants.

Natural elements: Strong winds threatening his balance, with cold weather nearly freezing his hands.

As Youssef stepped onto the balcony, the cold iron railing felt like ice against his palms. The city lights of Cairo twinkled below, but to him, they were like distant stars mocking his foolishness. His heart pounded so loudly he could hear it over the wind. Each step he took made the balcony creak ominously. He remembered Sarah’s words—“Is this project worth your life?”—and for a moment, he hesitated. But the ambition that had driven him for years pushed him forward. His fingers trembled as he reached for the paper, which fluttered teasingly just beyond his grasp.

Internal dialogue: "Why did I do this? Why did I choose work over my life?"

Chapter 2: Sub-Conversations—Voices from the Past

During his attempt to return, Youssef begins to hear strange voices echoing in his head, representing conversations with people from his past:

His father’s voice: "Youssef, work is important, but don’t forget yourself and your family!"

An old friend’s voice: "You were the smartest among us, but where is your life now?"

Sarah’s voice: "I’m scared for you. Come back to me!"

These voices grew louder, more vivid. His father’s voice was stern but filled with concern: “Son, I worked my whole life to provide for you, but I never missed a family dinner. What are you running after?” Then, his friend’s voice, laced with disappointment: “Remember how we dreamed of living life to the fullest? Now you’re stuck in an office, chasing promotions while life passes you by.” Sarah’s voice was the most painful—a soft, broken whisper: “I miss you, Youssef. When was the last time we laughed together?” These voices weren’t just memories; they felt like ghosts haunting him, each word a dagger of regret.

These voices intensify the tensinder: Are these voices real or products of his imagination and fear?

Chapter 3: Dramatic Development—The Closed Window

When Youssef tries to return, he finds the window unexpectedly closed. Here, the suspense peaks:

Desperate attempts: He tries to break the window or attract the attention of passersby, but to no avail.

Imaginations of death: He begins to imagine what would happen if he fell, and how the contents of his pockets would be just an incomprehensible yellow paper.

The closed window felt like a betrayal. He rattled the frame, but it wouldn’t budge. His breath fogged the glass, and for a second, he saw his own terrified reflection—a man trapped by his own choices. He pounded on the window, his knuckles turning raw. Below, people walked by, oblivious to his struggle. He screamed, but the wind swallowed his voice. The irony struck him: he had built walls around himself for success, and now those very walls were caging him.

Dramatic dialogue: "The contents of the dead man’s pockets... one paper with pencil marks... meaningless!"

Chapter 4: The Climax—Internal and External Battle

Youssef faces the peak of danger when he tries to break the window with a single punch, knowing that any mistake could mean his fall. Here, the following intertwine:

Mixed emotions: Fear, regret, hope.

Sub-conversations: Voices that encourage or discourage him.

Visual elements: Vivid descriptions of shattered glass, blood on his hands, and the distant sound of ambulance sirens.

With every punch, the glass cracked but didn’t shatter. Blood trickled down his wrist, mixing with sweat and rain. The voices in his head became a chaotic symphony—his father urging him to be strong, his friend mocking his helplessness, Sarah begging him to survive. For a moment, he considered giving up, but then he thought of Sarah’s face. With a final, desperate roar, he slammed his fist into the window. The glass shattered, and he fell inward, collapsing onto the floor.

Chapter 5: The Ending—The Lesson and Moral

After successfully getting inside, Youssef places the paper on the table, but another gust of wind takes it away again. This time, he just laughs and decides to go out to catch up with Sarah, realizing that life is more important than work.

As he lay on the floor, breathing heavily, he looked at the yellow paper on the table. It was just a piece of paper—ink and fibers. But it had nearly cost him everything. When the wind carried it away again, he didn’t panic. He laughed—a deep, liberating laugh. He realized that the paper was never the prize; it was a prison. He grabbed his phone and called Sarah: “I’m on my way. And I’m sorry.” For the first time in years, he felt free.

The moral: "Sometimes, we must lose something precious to realize what is most valuable."
