“A Shadow in the Night”
Dr. Emma Taylor had always been fascinated by the abandoned asylum on the outskirts of town. Rumors swirled about its dark past, but Emma wasn't one to believe in ghost stories. She was a scientist, driven by curiosity.
One stormy night, Emma decided to sneak in and explore the decaying halls. As she crept deeper, the creaking floorboards seemed to echo her heartbeat. Suddenly, she saw it – a shadowy figure lurking in the darkness.
Emma's flashlight flickered, casting eerie shadows on the walls. She approached the figure, her heart racing. As she drew closer, the figure turned, revealing a face that was identical to hers.
"Who are you?" Emma whispered.
The doppelganger smiled, its eyes gleaming with an otherworldly intensity. "I'm you," it whispered back. "Or rather, I'm the you that didn't make it out."
Emma's mind reeled as the doppelganger vanished into thin air. She stumbled backward, her flashlight dying. In the darkness, she heard her own voice whisper, "Welcome home."
