A Night Like Any Other. Or So I Thought

As on any given night, I walked into the emergency ward, faced with the all-too-familiar chaos—children weeping, adults weeping in agony, and the acrid scent of antiseptic lingering in the air.

At first, it did sort of make me uncomfortable, yes, but now… I'd gotten used to it. Numb, almost.

After washing my hands and face in the dressing room, I started to round and visit patients. I had no idea that this evening would be any different from all the other evenings previously. It would be an evening that I would not soon forget—a frightening, unforgettable hospital horror tale.

The Calm Before the Horror

As the hours ticked by, the disturbance slowly faded away. The clock edged towards midnight, and the recently emptied ward was quiet and foreboding. There were only a few patients left.

The nurses and doctors were stuck to their cell phones. As I only had an old keypad phone with no entertainment feature, I had little to keep me engaged.

We would barely ever receive more than one or two emergency cases for most nights at the graveyard shift. Sometimes, nobody would come at all. The workers would quietly sleep in various parts of the hospital.

I would generally sleep during the day, and it was then not difficult to stay awake nights. That night, as on most nights, I saw the last of the patients get sent home and the staff one by one grow sleepy.

Midnight at the Hospital

For once, everybody slept—yes, even the doctor. The hospital was quiet, too quiet. I was sure an emergency would arrive any minute. This was a government hospital, you know. Something always did happen.

Then. something happened.

I was sitting near the main entrance ward when, out of the corner of my eye, I saw someone in the distance carrying a child towards the ward. But the figures vanished even before they had reached the gate.

I rushed up and made a dash for the door, but no one was there. The corridor was empty.

I brushed it off as a trick of my mind and sat back down.

I could see a couple of trees that had been planted outside the building where I was sitting. In the dim light, they appeared to be a miniature forest.

My mind drifted away, but I was awakened to consciousness when a stray dog emerged out of the darkness, standing right at the gate, looking at me. It was scary. It turned and went back into the darkness after a while.

Something in its behavior disturbed me deeply.

The Cry That Shattered Silence

I considered waking up one of the workers, but they were all asleep—too deeply asleep.

Then from the women's ward, faintly, sounded a cry. A child's cry. It was faint but unmistakable.

I stood up, my heart pounding, and proceeded towards the sound. Upon entering the ward, my blood ran cold.

Standing nearby were the same people whom I had seen before—the couple and child. The child was already being evaluated by the doctor and noticing that I was present, he asked me to set up a nebulizer and bring emergency medicines from the storeroom.

I did as commanded. When we came back, the doctor was already in his room once again. He was drowsy, perhaps already asleep again.

Then, the family and I only were awake.

I handed the kid the nebulizer and proceeded to fetch the medication. But when I returned. the kid just lay there, quietly on the bench.

Her parents were gone.

Looked around, dazed. Scoured the entire corner of the ward. No trace of them anywhere. I even walked around the dimly lit hospital corridors. Nothing.

A Chilling Encounter

I was beginning to panic. Had I dreamed it all?

I sat down, my own breathing shaking, trying to compose myself. And then I felt a couple of icy hands descend on my shoulders.

I jumped, poised to scream, when a voice spoke gently:

"Don't be scared. Be awake. You're not dreaming. If only folks had remained awake that evening… perhaps our daughter would still be alive."

I glanced back and found the same couple I had just ministered to. The woman had tears running in her eyes. The man was numb.

She died," the man continued. "Because there was no one nearby. Because they all preferred sleep to responsibility. And we… we couldn't bear the guilt. So we departed this world as well.".

Their voices faded away as the child began crying again from the bench. They rushed towards her, and I followed behind.

Her condition was worsening. She needed urgent treatment. I ran out of the ward, screaming for the doctor and nurses to wake up.

Nothing Was as It Seemed

Finally, the people started waking up. The doctor came in, confused. I instructed him to give the first dose at once.

Everyone followed me to the ward.

But when we arrived. the child had disappeared.

The ward was empty.

Which child do you mean?" the doctor inquired. "We have not admitted a child for the last three hours.".

My hands were shaking. "Sir, I nebulized her myself. I called her parents. They just left!

No one listened to me. They said I was insane.

The Dog at the Gate Again

I went back to where I first sat. And there. at the gate. stood the same stray dog, not just at me, but at all of the staff. And this time, his eyes looked deeper.

One person picked up a rock and ran the dog off, laughing, "Since when are you afraid of dogs?"

I didn't respond. I couldn't.

The Last Farewell

The outside wind became stronger. I went outside, staying close to the gate once more, lost in contemplation.

And then I saw them.

The couple and the child… walking into the forest of trees behind the hospital.

I ran after them but fell on the stairs and landed flat. My head hit the ground.

The very last thing I could remember, before I passed out, was the three of them, standing by the trees, waving goodbye to me. like they knew me. like they were saying goodbye to me.

The Truth Buried in Silence

I woke up to find myself on a hospital bench. My parents were with me, concerned.

My mom whispered to the doctor, 'I always instruct him not to watch these fright movies… they play tricks in his head.'

My head pounded for days afterward, but I finally got back to my routine.

My working hours were converted to daytimes, and normal life began returning in a gradual manner.

But I never could go by the ward for women and not feel. something.

Justice Overlooked

Then one afternoon, when I was placing an IV in a child, I heard two women chatting:

"Do you not know? Our neighbor Hafsa baji, her husband, and daughter all died here. Staff negligence killed them."

I tensed.

I turned and requested that she explain them. She did.

It was exactly what I had witnessed.

I explained everything to the in-charge. Shame and guilt washed over their faces. They recalled the incident. They had suppressed it. Buried it.

I wrote a complaint. But nothing happened. A Call for Justice From Beyond I couldn't continue working there. My conscience wouldn't let me. I couldn't exact revenge on the innocent lives lost, but I hoped—prayed—that justice would be served one day. If not by men. then by the One above. Because He never sleeps.
