The Reflection in the Mirror Wasn't Mine

A Chilling Story of Identity, Fear, and the Supernatural

By Aravinth Kumar Sakthivel Published 11 months ago 2 min read

I never believed in ghosts. That is, until the night I saw something in my mirror that changed everything.

It was supposed to be a normal evening. I had just finished brushing my hair when I noticed something strange—the reflection in the mirror wasn’t following my movements. My hands stopped, but the girl in the mirror kept brushing. My stomach turned to ice.

I blinked. Maybe I was just tired. But when I reached out to touch the mirror, my reflection smiled at me. And I wasn’t smiling.

A Fractured Reality

I stumbled back, knocking over a glass of water on my nightstand. The cold liquid jolted me back to reality, but when I looked up, my reflection was normal again.

Just my imagination, I told myself.

But that night, I couldn’t sleep. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw that eerie smile, a smile that didn’t belong to me.

The Shadow Behind the Glass

Days passed, and I convinced myself it was a trick of the light—until it happened again. This time, I wasn’t alone. My best friend, Ava, was sitting on my bed, scrolling through her phone, when I gasped.

“Ava… do you see that?”

She looked up, confused. I pointed at the mirror.

It was subtle, but my reflection was wrong again. The head tilt was different, the fingers curled unnaturally. And then… it moved its lips.

But no sound came out.

A Message from the Other Side

I grabbed Ava’s arm, ready to run, but she didn’t move. Her eyes were locked on the mirror, wide with horror.

“I saw it,” she whispered.

The reflection raised a finger and pointed at the bottom of the mirror. There, in faint smudges, a message appeared:

“LET ME IN.”

The Escape That Came Too Late

We ran. I slammed my bedroom door shut and refused to go back inside alone. My parents chalked it up to stress, but I knew what I saw. Ava knew too.

That night, I slept in the living room, far away from the mirror. But as I drifted off, something whispered in my ear:

"You already let me in."

Final Thoughts: Is Your Reflection Truly Yours?

Many cultures believe mirrors are portals to other dimensions, places where spirits can cross into our world. But what if some reflections aren’t just reflections? What if they’re waiting for the moment you look away…?

Would you dare stare into your mirror tonight?
