Late at night, I make it a point to avoid walking across campus by myself. An assignment that is challenging enough for the typical student, who is able to do their late-night work in the comfort of their own dorm room with relative ease. An architecture student who has a propensity for postponing late night strolls or bike rides is something that I consider to be considered to be part of the territory.
I made it a practice to leave the architecture building after 2:00 AM on at least four consecutive evenings during a deadline week while I was a sophomore. Every single one of those nights was a deadline week. At all times, I made it a point to depart with a buddy who would be returning to the dormitory that was directly next to mine. I was afraid. Is it possible that strolling alone at night might cause someone to be afraid of genuine persons who have malevolent intentions?
Regardless of what they may be, I never gave them any thought. And at this moment, I am considering the possibility that I ought to have. A ghost. It just never occurred to me to consider it. On the other hand, I think that my carelessness is forgiven since, at the time, I was completely unaware that the campus was home to a spirit, whether it was kind or hostile. At the beginning of the freshmen orientation, there was no mention of ghosts, which may be considered lucky or possibly disastrous.
As a matter of fact, I have made it through almost three and a half years on this campus. There were years that passed during which I went for late-night walks without ever hearing a single word about the spirit. Being present among us. It was a state of blissful ignorance. Just one less thing to be concerned about. On the other hand, now that I am aware of the contrary, I will give Washington Hall a wide berth during the daylight and will give it a second thought before considering wandering near it late at night.
Unfortunately, Kathleen Van Vleet, who is in charge of the facilities management at Washington Hall, did not allay my concerns. She has been employed there for more than seventeen years, and she is able to speak to the fact that the so-called Ghost of Washington Hall is quite popular. Her first encounter with the ghost occurred during her first year at Notre Dame, when she was pursuing a degree in drama as an undergraduate student.
