The Perfect Partner

Love means different things to different people

Margaret entered the room, carrying a tray with two cups. “I made some coffee. Would you like some, Detectives?”

Detective Harris exchanged a glance with his partner before replying, “Thank you, Mrs. Doyle, but we need you to answer a few questions first.”

“Of course,” Margaret said, setting the tray down gently.

---

“Were you home when your husband… when he passed?” asked Detective Riley.

“Yes,” Margaret answered without hesitation.

“Were you in another room?”

“No.”

“Were you asleep?”

“No.”

Harris leaned forward, his frustration evident. “Then where were you?”

Margaret smiled softly, as if recalling a fond memory. “Right beside him. I held his hand and told him I’d be there till the very end. And I was.”

The room fell silent.

“It only took about ten minutes,” she added, stirring her coffee.

Great story. I’m wondering if she added something extra to their coffee though…
