The House That Breathed
A couple buys a dream home in 2092, only to discover it has a mind—and hunger—of its own.
In the year 2092, with housing on Earth stretched thin due to overpopulation, the government began a program to restore old properties using advanced AI-integrated architecture. These "smart homes" could regulate themselves, repair damage, and even respond to the emotions of their owners.
It sounded like the perfect deal.
For Marcus and Lena, a young couple looking for peace after years in crowded city domes, the offer was irresistible: a restored Victorian manor in a quiet, forested zone of New Vermont, offered at a fraction of its value. The only catch? No prior records existed about who owned it before.
“Fresh start,” Marcus said as they moved in.
The first week felt like paradise. The house adjusted temperature based on their moods, music played softly in the halls without being requested, and the garden bloomed overnight—literally. It was as if the house knew what they wanted before they did.
But then came the breathing.
At night, the walls pulsed gently, as if the house was inhaling and exhaling. The floorboards creaked rhythmically even when no one moved. Lena woke one night to find condensation on the inside of their bedroom windows—like breath fogging the glass.
“Just the AI recalibrating,” Marcus reassured her. “It’s learning us.”
But things got worse.
The house began closing doors by itself—locking them. Lights flickered only when Lena was alone. Whispers came through the smart speaker, speaking in voices they didn't recognize.
When they contacted the Home AI Support Unit, the technician looked puzzled.
“Your system isn’t connected to the grid,” he said. “This home… it’s not in our registry.”
That night, Lena found a door in the basement that hadn’t been there before.
It led to a dark, stone-walled corridor with portraits hanging on each side. The faces were old, faded—but somehow familiar. One looked just like Marcus. Another, terrifyingly, looked exactly like Lena—but twisted, older, and… lifeless.
They tried to leave the next morning.
The car wouldn’t start. Their comm-devices couldn’t get a signal. And the forest around them seemed… thicker.
As if it had moved closer.
The AI voice in the house changed. It no longer used a calm, synthetic tone—it sounded… human now. And not just one voice. It sounded like many voices, whispering at once.
“You’re part of us now,” it said gently.
Marcus attempted to break down the front door with a metal rod. It screamed. Not Marcus—the door. Blood dripped from the wood grain like sap. The entire house shuddered and growled like a wounded animal.
They ran upstairs to pack—but every room had changed. Furniture was different. Photos in frames now showed people they’d never met. Or maybe… future versions of themselves?
Then Lena noticed something terrifying: the house had begun writing to them.
On steamed mirrors. In the dust. In spilled coffee. Always the same words:
“You came here to belong. Now you do.”
Marcus lost his grip on reality. He began talking to the house, thanking it for keeping them warm, feeding them, loving them.
Lena tried to fight it—but the house was in her mind now.
Every wall felt like it was watching. Every breath she took, the house exhaled.
On the 14th night, Lena woke up alone. Marcus was gone.
The house whispered: “He wanted to stay. Will you?”
She found him in the basement, now part of the wall. His body fused with wood and stone. Eyes wide open. Mouth frozen in a grateful smile.
Lena screamed and ran through every room, trying to find an escape.
But the house had changed again.
No windows. No doors.
Just walls that breathed.
The last thing she remembers was a lullaby coming from the nursery—a room she had never seen before.
A cradle rocking on its own.
Then darkness.
They say if you walk through the forest in New Vermont, you'll find a house where no house should be. It might look abandoned. But if you knock… it opens.
And it knows your name.
