The Haunting Echoes of Devil’s Lake
Where grief clings to the water... and cries are never truly gone. By Cries from Devil’s Lake

Devil’s Lake, Wisconsin.
A quiet retreat nestled in Baraboo’s rolling hills, known for its serene beauty, dense forests, and glacial cliffs. On the surface, it looks peaceful. Tourists kayak, fish, and hike. Families picnic near the shore.
But ask the locals—
And you’ll hear a different story.
They'll tell you the lake mourns.
That it remembers.
That it takes.
A Lake That Doesn't Let Go
They say years ago, a woman drowned beneath the glassy surface. Some say it was an accident. Others whisper it was heartbreak. Either way, she was never found. Not fully. Not whole.
Since then, the stories have never stopped. Campers disappearing without a trace. Boats drifting back without passengers. Strange splashes at night when no one is near the water.
And the voices.
Always the voices.
Whispers that drift across the surface.
Soft sobs from beneath your canoe.
A distant cry:
“Help me…”
“It’s cold…”
The Woman in the Water
Legend calls her The Drowned One. Some believe she’s still searching—for her lost love, her stolen child, her stolen life. Others say her soul is fractured, tethered to the lake by pain so deep the water itself grieves.
What’s more terrifying?
Sometimes the lake returns what it takes.
But never how it left.
A Warning for the Curious
If you visit Devil’s Lake and hear a voice calling to you, especially after dark…
Don’t answer.
The water listens.
The water remembers.
And the water doesn’t forgive.
A Story Still Unfolding…
I'm sharing the darker side of America’s forgotten legends—folk horror, haunted history, and the terrifying truths buried in silence. Cries from Devil’s Lake is more than just a name… It’s a reminder that even still waters can run deep with sorrow.
