The Forgotten Forest
Some paths should never be taken... especially when the forest has a mind of its own.
Samantha had always been a lover of the outdoors, her spirit drawn to the calming embrace of nature. After years of city life, she was craving the peace of the wild—an escape from the chaos of her everyday routine. When her old college friend, Lucy, invited her to visit her cabin in the woods for a weekend getaway, Samantha jumped at the chance.
The cabin was nestled deep in a forest, a secluded paradise where cell phones had no signal, and the closest town was miles away. Lucy assured Samantha that the area was safe—an untouched part of nature, far removed from the disturbances of civilization. But as Samantha drove up the narrow road, winding deeper into the woods, an unsettling feeling began to creep over her. The air seemed unnaturally still, as if the forest itself were holding its breath.
Upon arriving at the cabin, Samantha was greeted with warm hospitality, but there was something strange about Lucy’s behavior. Her smile seemed a little too forced, her eyes darting nervously whenever she mentioned the surrounding woods. Lucy warned Samantha not to wander too far into the forest, especially after dark. "The woods have a way of... changing people," Lucy said cryptically.
That night, the wind howled through the trees, and the forest outside seemed to murmur with life. Samantha lay in bed, unable to sleep. The odd warnings lingered in her mind, but she brushed them aside as just the ramblings of someone who had lived in isolation too long.
The next morning, curiosity got the best of her. Samantha decided to take a walk alone, hoping to clear her head. She ignored Lucy's hesitations, telling herself that she was just being paranoid. As she ventured deeper into the forest, the path became less clear, overgrown with vines and thick branches. The further she walked, the quieter it became. The sounds of birds and rustling leaves faded, replaced by an eerie silence that seemed to envelop her.
Soon, she found herself at a clearing she hadn’t seen before. At the center of it stood a large, ancient tree, its bark twisted and gnarled. The tree's branches seemed to curl inward, like fingers reaching toward the sky, and beneath it lay a stone circle, worn by time but unmistakable in its design. The moment Samantha stepped into the clearing, she felt it—something watching her.
The temperature dropped suddenly, and her breath misted in the cold air. A shiver ran down her spine, but she pressed on, her feet carrying her to the tree. As she reached out to touch the bark, the ground beneath her trembled, and the wind picked up, howling louder than ever.
Suddenly, a voice—low, distorted, and far too close—whispered in her ear. "You shouldn’t have come."
She spun around, but there was no one there. Her heart began to race, and she hurried to leave the clearing, but the forest around her seemed to shift. The trees seemed to lean in, narrowing the path, trapping her. The sun, which had been bright just moments before, was now blocked by a thick, oppressive mist that rolled in from all sides.
Samantha’s steps quickened as she tried to retrace her path, but no matter which direction she took, the landscape seemed to distort, the trees shifting positions like sentient beings. The deeper she walked into the mist, the more it felt like the forest was alive, closing in on her.
With her pulse pounding, she turned a corner and found herself back in the clearing. This time, the tree was different. It loomed even larger, its bark darker and more sinister, and the stone circle now appeared broken, as though it had been disturbed. Something was very wrong.
The whispers came again, louder, more insistent. "It’s too late. You’re one of us now."
Samantha froze in terror, her breath catching in her throat. She backed away, but the clearing seemed to stretch, making the path back seem impossibly distant. The tree’s branches reached out like the hands of a thousand silent witnesses, and she could feel their eyes upon her.
In a panic, she ran, her legs trembling beneath her, but the woods seemed to close in faster, the mist thickening and choking the air. The trees were no longer just trees. They were watching, moving, whispering secrets from long forgotten times.
She stumbled upon the edge of the forest and saw the cabin in the distance. Desperate to escape, she bolted toward it, her heart racing, the whispers still echoing in her ears. She finally reached the door and pounded on it, but Lucy didn’t answer.
The door swung open on its own, and Samantha stepped inside. But as she turned to close it, she gasped. The forest outside was no longer the forest she had seen earlier. The trees were twisted, contorted, their shapes humanlike, their branches reaching toward her as if they had been waiting for her to return.
Samantha’s eyes darted around the cabin, but it was different too—darker, older. The furniture was decayed, as if the cabin had been abandoned for years. And in the corner, standing in the shadows, was Lucy—her eyes wide, her smile twisted into something unrecognizable.
"You found it," Lucy said, her voice distorted, as if speaking from far away. "You found the heart of the forest. And now, you belong to it."
Samantha backed away, but the door slammed shut behind her, trapping her inside with Lucy and the forest that had claimed her. The last thing she saw before the mist overtook her was the tree outside, its branches now fully alive, clawing at the cabin, eager to bring her into its dark embrace.
The forest had chosen its new resident.
