Lídia was working late. Normally, she was the first to leave work. Even if it was chaos or if someone needed help, she simply didn’t care. But today, fate changed her plans. Everyone had already left, except for her. No one asked if she needed help. The boss had sent a project at the last minute, and it had to be delivered today without fail. Lídia was usually a fast worker, faster than her colleagues. She often boasted about it and thought she had the right to mistreat them.

She was working peacefully, completely isolated from any human sound, until, at one point, she heard a strange noise coming from the hallway. Lídia stayed alert, waiting for the sound to continue so she could decipher it. But silence followed, and nothing came. She ignored it and continued her work.

As soon as she finished, she went out into the hallway and suddenly heard the strange sound again. It was so unusual that she couldn’t figure out what it was. She turned around and saw nothing. Just darkness. She thought to herself, "It’s probably nothing," and continued on her way to the elevator.

Once inside, the few lights in the hallway went out. And she heard footsteps. With a quick motion, she pressed the button to close the doors and clicked the button for the ground floor. When the doors closed, she let out a sigh of relief.

Suddenly, the doors slowly opened again. Her heart raced. Something was wrong. All she could see was darkness outside. She pressed the button repeatedly, but the doors stayed still.

The footsteps were getting closer, and they echoed louder with each step.

But as soon as they reached the elevator, the sound stopped. The door began to move, and as it was about to close, Lídia was enveloped by darkness.

The elevator descended normally to the ground floor. The doors opened, and Lídia was found sitting motionless, with a smile on her face.

The next day, Lídia’s body was found. People didn’t feel sorrow for the loss. They even felt relieved to be rid of a toxic colleague. She became the subject of gossip. Rumors spread through the hallways. Since she was the only one who left before the end of the workday, they said she couldn’t handle the pressure of that day, that she went mad and committed suicide with a smile on her face.

Others said it was revenge from a colleague she had unjustly fired.

To this day, no one knows what really happened to Lídia or why she had that horrific smile on her face.
