The Drifters

A Rain-Soaked Road to Mysterious Desires

By MartinGoldPublished 2 years ago 4 min read

Raindrops tapped gently against the windshield as John veered out of the drive-in and onto the adjacent street. His car, an aging Chevy he had acquired from a less-than-reputable used car dealer some time ago, swayed slightly on the wet pavement. Lost in thought about the movie he had just seen, he drove along the dimly lit road, moving away from the drive-in. The film had been one of those forgettable romantic comedies, with a plot involving a female lead secretly infatuated with her best friend’s boyfriend. John wouldn’t dwell on it for long. The only thing that had left a lasting impression was the lead actress, whose stunning appearance lingered in his mind. Especially the scene where she had donned a blue bikini on the beach was etched in his memory. John imagined himself on a rainy autumn road, on a deserted beach, spending an afternoon with the gorgeous Hollywood blonde from the film. The sound of the ocean echoed in their ears as he and his dream girl shared a passionate kiss.

Startled out of his daydream by the honking of an overtaking car, John realized he had likely been driving slower than he should have. Three teenagers in a passing car grinned at him, likely on a late-night joyride through various bars and clubs. One of them, a younger guy, gestured with a middle finger. The car quickly sped past, returning to its lane in front of John before disappearing from view. Shaking off the incident, John accelerated and focused on the rain-soaked road ahead.

After a while, John spotted two young women standing by the roadside ahead, each holding out a thumb, hitchhiking. Two drifters, he thought. Both were dressed lightly for the season, wearing jean shorts. It was risky for two provocatively dressed women to be hitchhiking on a deserted country road late at night. John wasn’t the type to pick up strangers, but there was something about these attractive young women that intrigued him. He eased off the gas, slowing down and eventually pulling over on the roadside behind the hitchhikers. The two women, each carrying a backpack, approached his car. Up close, John saw that they were even more beautiful than he had initially thought. One had flowing blonde hair, reminiscent of the Hollywood beauty from the film. The other had longer straight black hair that contrasted starkly. She was taller and sported dark makeup, giving her a gothic appearance. With a grateful smile, she opened the passenger door.

“Thanks,” the dark-haired hitchhiker said. “Really kind of you to offer us a ride in this terrible weather. The last car just drove past us.”

“Happy to help,” John replied.

She settled into the passenger seat after taking off her backpack. The blonde woman opened the rear right door and took a seat in the back. With his unexpected passengers on board, John gently pressed the accelerator, and his old Chevy pulled away. “Where are you ladies headed?” he asked after driving a short distance.

“Where are you going?” his passenger countered with an unexpected question.

Slightly puzzled, John furrowed his brow. “Just a few miles to the next town, actually. That’s where I live. But I can drive you a bit farther if you need.”

“No, the town sounds fine,” the woman beside him replied.

Their lack of a clear destination intrigued John, but he didn’t show it. “So, should I drop you off somewhere in town?”

“We’ll figure it out,” the dark-haired woman in the passenger seat answered, adding to the confusion. Trying to mask his uncertainty, John reached for the radio’s power button. “Want to listen to some music?” Without waiting for an answer, he turned the radio dial. A soft piano piece replaced the classic rock song that had been playing. John, however, paid little attention to the music. A nervous tremor ran through him. The last time he had been touched by a woman like this had been ages ago in high school. His anxious gaze returned to the rearview mirror.

“The young man seems shy,” observed the blonde in the back seat, whom her friend had named Cassandra. “We should show him how appreciative we can be.” Cassandra adjusted her dark top, revealing a bare breast. She teasingly pinched her nipple with her thumb and forefinger, wetting her lips with her tongue.

Meanwhile, John’s passenger unbuttoned her black blouse, revealing a matching lace bra.

The audacity of their advances caught John off guard. He hadn’t considered himself the kind of person to experience such situations. On the contrary, he had often been teased for his shyness. But his eyes weren’t deceiving him.

As John’s heart raced and his nerves were pushed to their limit, little did he know that the enigmatic allure of the two hitchhikers was merely a smokescreen for their hidden intentions. Their behavior was about to lead him into a twisted, perilous journey that would test his wits and survival instincts. Who were these women, and what secrets did they hold? Would John uncover the truth before it was too late? To find out the thrilling answers, dive into the gripping tale of “The Drifters.” Can you guess what sinister fate awaits John as he continues down the rain-soaked road with his mysterious passengers?
