The autopsy of Jane doe

a story of gruesome torment

By E. hasanPublished 9 months ago 5 min read

There's bloody gore everywhere in this movie. human organs are showcased. Jane doe is naked. VIEWERS DISCRETION IS ADVISED for whoever wishes to watch the movie after reading this~ You can call it a review or an explanation, whichever you prefer. I personally don't know what to call this. I pretty much put everything about the movie in here. so, spoilers ahead ⚠️⚠️

Truth be told, I remember watching this movie with my eyes partially closed. yes , it's that terrifying.

The Discovery of Jane Doe

The film begins with a grisly crime scene in a suburban home. Police, including Sheriff Sheldon (played by Michael McElhatton), discover multiple bodies—all violently killed. The victims include the homeowners, a couple, and an unidentified young woman found half-buried in the basement. Strangely, the young woman’s body shows no signs of decay or trauma, despite the bloodshed around her.

The sheriff orders the body to be sent to the local coroner, Tommy Tilden (Brian Cox), and his son, Austin (Emile Hirsch), for an autopsy to determine the cause of death.

Tommy and Austin work in their family-run mortuary, which is attached to their home. They begin the autopsy on the unidentified woman, whom they refer to as "Jane Doe." as her identity is anonymous.

Jane Doe has no visible injuries, bruises, or signs of struggle.

based on the external examinations they find that her skin is pale but remarkably preserved. One astonishing fact that the body had a very slim waste suggesting everyday use of a corset. A thing which is not a part of our modern daily life.

Austin starts to describe the cadaver ; victim appears to be in her mid to late 20's , pale Caucasian skin, brown hair. And when he proceeds to open her eyes to determine her eye colour, they both become speechless. Her eyes are cloudy. such symptom can only be seen in people who have been dead for days whereas the victim Infront most clearly died hours before. hence, the cloudy eyes puzzled them .

The victim also doesn't suffer from rigor Mortis ,which is a post-mortem stiffness that is an inseparable part of death . Based on the signs the movie suggests she's recently deceased, with blood still flowing, while her eyes are clouded, indicating a longer time of death. This creates a paradox and adds to the mysterious nature of the film.

Internal Examination (First Strange Discovery)

When Tommy cuts into her, her organs appear rather almost fresh, her exterior shows no trauma of such kind.

Her wrists and ankles show internal fractures, possible broken bones, as if she had been restrained violently. Her tongue has been severed off cleanly. A molar tooth missing from her mouth. They find old, withered lungs (inconsistent with the fresh organs).

upon further examination they cut open her skin layers, there are cuts on her body that look like witch marks (ritualistic symbols used to ward off and/or contain evil ).

As they work, strange things begin happening in the mortuary:

The radio randomly changes stations, playing the eerie song "Open Up Your Heart (And Let the Sunshine In)." The corpse’s toes twitch (though they dismiss it as a muscle reflex).

The lights flicker, and the power goes out, forcing them to use emergency generators. the other bodies that were kept in the freezers disappear, leaving them puzzled and horrified.

Unraveling the Mystery

Tommy and Austin grow increasingly disturbed by their findings Tommy pulls out a flower from Jane Doe’s stomach along with a cloth like something that contains a molar tooth with blood—likely from vomiting it up before death. That's the same molar tooth that Jan doe was missing from her mouth .it was possibly yanked out of her gum, wrapped in a cloth and she was force fed the small ball of cloth , which is why they found it in her stomach. Her heart was bruised, as if squeezed. Most horrifyingly, when they X-ray her, they see that all her bones have been broken methodically from the inside out.

Tommy realizes Jane Doe was tortured over a long period, possibly as part of a dark ritual. what if she was just another innocent girl that was subjected to inhuman torture in faith on lies of her being a witch.

They examine the cloth and find out that the markings on the cloth and her skin are the same.

Paranormal Events Escalate

As the night progresses, the mortuary becomes a nightmarish trap. The corpse of a man (a previous case) suddenly sits up and screams.

Austin’s girlfriend, Emma (Ophelia Lovibond), arrives but gets accidentally killed by Tommy.

The two try to escape but find all exits mysteriously sealed. They hear whispers and see ghostly figures of past victims. The more they investigate, the more they become part of her curse.

Tommy deduces that Jane Doe is a witch who was subjected to a brutal execution (possibly during the Salem witch trials). Her body was hidden underground to contain her curse, but now that she’s been unearthed, her spirit is awakening.

The Final Revelation

Tommy does some internet digging and finds out that The witch inflicts pain on others that mirrors her own suffering. She feeds on fear and traps souls in an endless loop of torment.

They finally decide to take out her brain samples. upon analyzing they finally understand why they couldn't determine the cause of her death.

BECAUSE SHE WAS NEVER DEAD TO BEGIN WITH.

Her brain was still active, meaning that she felt the autopsy too. the cuts and incisions they had to make to determine her cause of death.

Realizing they’re doomed, Tommy decides to burn Jane Doe’s body to break the curse. However, The flames mysteriously spread everywhere, forcing them to extinguish the fire. As they extinguish the flames, they discover something thrilling. the girl's body didn't suffer a single scratch from the fire .

Tommy , out of love for his son decides to sacrifice himself to Jane doe. All of the sufferings done on Jane doe start to heal as they get transferred to Tommy . Tommy asks his son to kill him as he couldn't bear pain and agony instilled by the witch anymore. with a heavy heart Austin proceeds to kill his own father. Austin tries to flee but sees his deceased father's corpse standing in front of him , shocked he runs. Upon trying to flee , he falls down and eventually dies.

The sheriff arrives next morning, sees the carnage, and calls for backup—unknowingly sealing his own fate as the cycle continues.

Conclusion: The Curse Lives On

The film ends with Jane Doe’s body being transported to another facility, implying that her curse will spread further. The autopsy was never just a medical procedure—it was a ritual of awakening for an ancient evil.

The movie ends with one last haunted act. a small twitch of her left toe.

The horror settings of the movie's environment helps in enhancing the mysterious outcomes of the unknown. Jane Doe’s torture reflects real historical witch hunts, which makes it all so more terrifying.

The mortuary becomes a claustrophobic nightmare where reality bends at Jane doe's will.

The movie leaves some mysteries unanswered like Jane Doe’s full origin, why she was buried like that, what was it really like to go through that torment, reinforcing the idea that some evils are beyond human understanding.

will you watch this movie? If yes, make sure you're not alone.
