That Old Barn

Ragarna

By Mackenzie HainesPublished 5 years ago 3 min read

There was always that old barn by the farm near my house, it always had a presence that was so unsettling. I never knew what actually went on at that farm, I always assumed it was just normal farm things, like chickens and goats lived there. But I always had a hunch that something was going on there; I never saw a farmer or anyone there which was obviously odd.

On one particular night, there was a full moon and I had awoke from a nightmare, gasping from fright. I decided to get something to drink to calm my nerves. However, I had noticed a bright, white light coming from that old barn. But no one was ever there, So I wonder what could be going on. Curiosity had taken over after I had heard a ungodly loud shriek; The shriek was so loud, goosebumps appeared all over me from the shear vibration felt

I thought to myself, " What the hell?" And headed over to see if everything was alright. I had walked to the decrepit barn, silently peaking inside, and what I saw next, simply shook me to my core; A giant snow owl, emitting a bright, white light, as if it was a god. Many other species of owl were there, surrounding the giant owl. There were Great Horned owls, Barred owls, Barn owls, as well as many more. There were bones of various animals scattered about the hay covered floor, and what appeared like a shrine. I look away thinking, "What is gong on?" & " Who owns this place?, basically disassociating from the current moment, lost in my own thoughts. As soon as I started being present again, I was surrounded by what seemed like hundreds of owls. They basically forced me inside to face, Ragarna, the Owl god. This giant creature's eyes had locked with mine, black, dark and almost soulless.

I dont really know what happened next, I had blacked out and I awoke in my bed covered in dirt and sweat. " Was it a dream? " I thought to myself. I waited till following night to see if it would happen again, and sure enough the light appeared again. I marched over to prove to myself it was truly nothing. Inside the bright barn, the shrine still stood, Ragarna, written in what appears like blood. Suddenly the barn doors shut behind me, and I was met with several people in dark robes. They attacked me, pinning me to the ground, and tying me up. They gathered around me, stating, that they've been waitng for Ragarna to reveal itself to someone to sacrifice. As I was tied there, waiting for my death, I heard sirens in the distance. Little did I know my family had called the police after not finding me in my bed, worried about what could of happend.

Police head towards the brightly lit barn to see a giant flock of owls surrounding it; Panicked the group had scattered, running to escape capture. Im not sure how the got away but the had left me tied to this chair; Police barge in and find the shrine, the bones, the blood and me dirty and tied to a chair. They freed me, and asked me everything I knew, but I didnt know anything other than what I had seen the night before.

Later to find out, the barn was abandoned and left to decay. The city decided to demolish the barn for the hazard of all the owls and the building itself. The owls were released back into the wild and that was it. As soon as it started, it was over, without many answers. I may never know what happened but a barn owl still visits me every night as if it was a reminder.
