Terror in the Chunnel

A train ride to death

I was riding through the Chunnel by train going from London to Paris. This was my first time on the Chunnel and the only reason I was doing it was because I needed to get to Paris quickly. My boss was sending me over there to seal a business deal that would net us several million euros so this was top priority. Something about being one hundred and twenty feet underwater in a tunnel was just an unsettling idea. I know people use the Chunnel all the time and there has never been a problem but normally I figure don't test your own good luck.

I had gotten on the train an hour ago so we were close to halfway there when suddenly the train came to a screeching halt. All the lights went out and were soon replaced with flashing red lights. A stewardess was walking down the aisles yelling out over the general commotion, "Everyone stay calm. This is a temporary stop. The train's sensors detected an anomaly up ahead and the automatic braking system kicked in. Once the anomaly is found and dealt with we will be back in our way."

I sat there with my eyes closed humming to myself. I was trying to keep myself calm and remembering that nobody has ever really had a problem with the Chunnel so it would be okay. I checked my watch, having to squint to see what it said. Ten minutes had passed since we had stopped and there had been no more news. I stuck my head out into the aisle looking around to see if the stewardess was anywhere to be seen but I couldn't find her. I closed my eyes, tapping my feet a little faster and humming a little louder.

I checked my watch again. Another ten minutes had passed and nothing had happened. I started to lean my head out into the aisle again when I heard the sound of metal being ripped apart. I could see the roof of the train up ahead from me being ripped off and an eye staring down into the train. Suddenly a host of tentacles reached down into the train and started picking people up. I did the only thing I could think to do and started running down the train the opposite way.

As I ran I could suddenly hear above everything else the sound of rushing water. Whatever this creature was had broken part of the tunnel walls and now water was rushing in. I remembered having seen a set of stairs out my window maybe five minutes before the train stopped. I already knew that would be a much longer run for me than it had been for the train so I needed to really run. I could hear more metal being ripped apart behind me and other people had joined me in running away. However I could hear some of them being pulled away by the creature. Their screams echoing in the tunnel but also being lost in the sound of the rushing water.

It didn't take long before the water was up above my ankles. My speed had already been cut significantly by the water but I had to keep pushing forward. I took a quick look backwards to see that the train was pretty much in shambles now and the creature was nowhere to be seen. I wondered how something that big could just up and disappear. I turned my head back only to find that the creature is now in front of me. It's standing on four legs with a number of tentacles coming off it's back. I can't really see much else about it other than that it only has one eye and a massive gaping mouth filled with teeth.

It was standing directly in front of us and looking at us. It's mass of tentacles started snaking out and grabbing people just casually popping them into its mouth. I keep running, managing to dodge the few tentacles that came my way. I was running between its legs now where apparently it's tentacles couldn't reach. Soon it was behind me again and only a handful of other people had made it with me. I strained my eyes looking ahead, barely able to see a glow coming from the stairwell up ahead. I looked back at the monster who was still happily eating all the people it had grabbed.

The water was now up to my thighs. My run had slowed down to a somewhat quick walk now. I could see the light getting closer little by little. I might actually make it out of this. I continue trudging forward as the water keeps getting higher and higher. I can hear the creature now stomping through the water getting closer to us. I decided to try swimming now that the water had reached my chest. I'm actually able to move a little faster now. I can hear people behind me screaming but the stomping has stopped so I just keep swimming.

I finally make it to the stairwell climbing my way up onto the landing and throwing myself through the door. I slam it behind me and sink down to the floor breathing heavily. I can hear the stomping resume again but soon it's fading off. However the water has already gotten high enough that it's starting to leak under the door. So now it's time to start going up the stairs. I take them two at a time hoping that it will somehow lead to the outside. After five sets worth of stairs I'm standing in front of a door that has a sign that says, "Employees Only". I try to open it only to find it locked. I start banging on the door yelling, "Someone open the door! I somehow escaped that creature! I need help!"

The door flings open, almost knocking me down. There's a man wearing an official Chunnel staff outfit. He waves me in closing the door behind me. I'm standing in what looks like a security room. Most of the TV's are only showing static, the few that are working show that there are actually multiple monsters running around wrecking havoc. The tunnel is almost completely filled with water now and I can see screens on the other side of the room flashing red showing multiple breaches. I look at the man, "Please tell me there is a way out of here that doesn't take us past those things."

The man nodded, "There is however we have no idea if those things are topside and we would have to leave by boat. I'm not sure if that would be the best idea either. But I'm pretty sure we can't stay here. So screw it we're leaving." He gathered up a couple of supplies muttering as he did, "Really wish I had a gun. Not that I figure it would do any good right now."

He took us out of the security room through another door, "Alright we got about ten flights of stairs to get topside. There should be boats tied up to the dock. We'll take one and figure out where to go from there." We proceeded up the stairs quickly. At a couple of landings we could see down into the Chunnel through small windows. It was completely flooded at this point and we could see the murky figures of the monsters swimming through it. It looked like they were heading towards London.

We came up topside to find that the boats were still there but that the guardsman's worst fear was accurate. We could see just from the little dock we were standing on four of the monsters. Two heading towards London and the other two heading towards Paris. I looked at the guard, "So, what now?"
